Geometric Art

Create a work of modern geometric art. You can make either an abstract (shown on left) or
representational (shown on right) piece.

The majority of the art must be drawn with a ruler, or compass, or a round object, using proper
geometric constructions as practiced in class (not drawn freehand). For an extra challenge,
like the Picasso shown on the right, make it representational and look like something (but
using geometric shapes). If you choose to create a drawing or painting, it must be coloured. If
you choose another medium for your art eg. string art, crochet, outdoor mandala in the snow,
or sculpture, then coloring is optional and color may be determined by your media. Your art
piece must include the following:

Triangles Angles Lines

o
Equilateral 30 Parallel
Isosceles 45 o Perpendicular
Scalene 90 o Intersecting
Right Reflex At least one line segment with a
perpendicular bisector
Obtuse An Angle with a constructed
bisector
Acute
Other Shapes
Square Rhombus Circle
Parallelogram quadrilateral Curves

You may use other freehand shapes for extra details (like the fingernails on the Picasso). You
need to show all of the things in the chart above, but more than one requirement from the
chart above can be shown in a single geometric shape eg. right triangle could also count as a
perpendicular line, circle could have a portion count as a curve.
Your assignment submission should include:

1. Rough copy diagram of your art work with geometric shapes and constructions labelled (does
not need to be colored) and written explanation and/or labels with arrows showing where the
shapes and constructions are found in your art.

2. Good copy or presentation version of your artwork (The final art work- might be a photo of a
sculpture or piece of string art, painting, or needlework)

3. Rubric, including chart used as a checklist to show that you have checked off each required
shape/construction while creating your design.

Rubric: Your project will be assessed on:

1. Accuracy of geometric shapes and constructions
- neatly and accurately measured and drawn with math tools
2. Completeness- all required shapes and constructions are identified in your art

3. Communicates mathematical ideas – rough copy indicates where all shapes and constructions
are located within your art in a concise and clear way, using labels, or a legend, and/ or written
explanations.
4. Math reasoning and shape/pattern recognition – creatively integrating geometric shapes and
constructions into a piece of art of your choice
