9
Thinking Inside The Box a.k.a Linear Thinking?

10
What is Linear Thinking?

Also Called Convergent Thinking

Because it forces us to converge to an answer
11
Thinking Outside The Box a.k.a Lateral Thinking?

12
What is Lateral Thinking?

It’s a subset of what is called Divergent Thinking

Because it forces us to diverge ideas and solutions

Thinking Outside The Box

The Origin Story

• One story of origin of the phrase

"thinking outside the box“ was a
nine-dot puzzle

• John Adair, a British academic,

claims to have introduced in 1969

• The puzzle proposed an intellectual

challenge

16
Thinking Inside The Box

The Seemingly Impossible Goal

• Link all 9 dots using four (4)

straight lines or fewer

• Without lifting the pen

• Without tracing the same line more

than once

• All such answers (one example

shown right) require the solver to
draw a line that extends outside of
the "box" formed by the grid.

17
Thinking Outside The Box

The Seemingly Impossible Goal is

Actually Possible

• The answers require the solver to

draw a line that extends outside of
the "box" formed by the grid.

• One example shown right

• There are several possible

answers

• The puzzle only seems difficult

because people commonly imagine a
boundary that they should always
draw line inside the array

18
Thinking Outside The Box

Another Seemingly Impossible Goal

• Link all 9 dots using just one (1)

straight line!

• Without lifting the pen

• Without tracing the same line more

than once

19
Thinking Outside The Box

Another Seemingly Impossible Goal,

Again, Actually Possible

• The solution involves looking

outside the two-dimensional sheet
of paper on which the nine dots are
drawn

• Coning the paper three-

dimensionally aligning the dots along
a spiral

• Thus, a single line can be drawn

connecting all nine dots

What is The Box?

• General Assumptions

• Expectations

• Biases

• Rules, Guidance

• Procedures, Sequence

• Standards, Norms, Conventions

• Best Practices

• Acceptable Notions or Paradigm

• Constraints, Restrictions

22
Is The Box Bad?

The Box is Good When We…

• Need quick decision making

• Solve simple, repetitive problems

that don’t require creativity, or can
be solved using linear thinking

• Want to implement incremental

improvement

• Want something that makes us feel

comfortable, less disruptive

• Want to minimize mistakes

23
Is The Box Bad?

The Box Could Be Limiting When We…

• Need a breakthrough solution

• Try to solve complex problems that

requires creativity which cannot be
solved using linear thinking

• Want to implement transformational,

exponential improvement

• Want to be a pioneer, or challenging

status quo

People Who Got Rid of The Box

• Pict taken on 14 March 1951 his 72nd birthday

• “If you always do what you always did, you

will always get what you always got”

• Scientist who believed imagination is more

important than knowledge

• Newton introduced the concept of gravity in

the 17th century – that objects fall because
they are pulled by Earth's gravity.

• Einstein reimagined the concept of space,

time, gravity, matter, energy – objects don’t
fall, they freely move in a curve spacetime
influenced by mass & energy

…Imagine if you were to create solutions without The Box

To know your box, asks

• “What do you & others
typically believe or assume”
• “Why you believe it”
• “What are you told to do”
• “What can’t you do”
• “What do you have now?"
Then asks yourself “What Ifs”

44
Create environment where you can think outside the box

• Get perspectives from creative people. People with

completely diverse, different backgrounds tend to bring new
ideas.

• Work against your routines. If you usually don’t work out

before work, try to work out. Find different route to go to office.

• Find new space to work. If you always work at your desks,

try to work elsewhere, at a coffee shop, outdoor, park, garden,
malls, somewhere colorful, or messy tend to unleash
creativity.

• Study different industries. Benchmark to seemingly

unrelated industries might spark new ideas.

• Stimulate your senses. Listen to stimulating, energetic

music. Indulge yourself with aromatherapy.

Example of courageous act, outside the box!

a $5 of funding in an envelope.

Teacher tells each team that once they open the envelope,
they have 2 hours to make as much money as they can.

Working Outside The Box Can Be Both Risky & Rewarding

The Risks
• Outside the Box is unknown territories
• It’s uncomfortable, sometimes painful
• It’s where mistakes will very likely
happen

The Rewards
• It’s where growth & innovation could
happen exponentially
• Where rewards and gains are the highest
• Where you can be pioneer & build legacy
