Section A1-1
Image Title ESPANA Y FILIPINAS

OBSERVE
Describe what you see. • What do you notice first? • What people and objects are shown? • How are they
arranged? • What is the physical setting? • What, if any, words do you see? • What other details can you
see?

The painting itself is interesting. It is eye-catching as it provides good aura and calm
atmosphere for the viewer. You can also notice a depiction of two female wearing
elegant dresses. There is also a staircase where the women embarking their steps,
having both their backs like heading towards a faraway horizon. I find it cute and
meaningful as well because of the images of flowers and the bright radiance of the
sun. I know this is not just a simple painting but rather than an image possessed with
different exquisite characteristics.

REFLECT

Why do you think this image was made? • What’s happening in the image? • When do you think it was
made? • Who do you think was the audience for this image? • What tools were used to create this? • What
can you learn from examining this image?

Espana y Filipinas is an oil on wood painting or canvas on 1886 created by Juan

Luna, a Filipino painter, illustrator, and revolutionary activist. We can observe that
the women in the image are the representation of Spain and Philippines. The
Spaniard woman or “Mother of Spain” is drawn with wide and strong shoulder
while the Filipino woman or “Inang Bayan” was illustrated as a graceful and
brown-skinned. Their dress shows the cultural character, class consciousness and
social transformations. The taller and maternal figure Mother Spain leading the
fledgling Filipina into the light of knowledge and away from her vaunted
barbarianism.

I believe it is intended not just for the Filipinos or Spaniards to see the difference
but to reflect from it that once both countries establish good relationship and
unify then development, economic improvement, modernization and equality will
prevail. It is indeed then a starting point of true hope and new beginning.

USE IT AS HISTORICAL EVIDENCE

What did you find out from this document that you might not learn anywhere else? • What other
documents or historical evidence are you going to use to help you understand this event or topic?

I think one thing that I got from this topic is to how we see our past and ourselves
remade from those moments in the bygone days. I mean the lessons that we only
learn and considered the best is from our experience and journey in life. That even an
image taught us to see those transformations began to change for a better outcome.

There are videos and even articles existing that I could possibly utilize in the future as
sources or historical evidence for me to clearly and deeply understand such topic.
