MUSIC 6
LESSON 2: Rhythmic Patterns and Meters
EXPECTATIONS
You will respond to music heard. Specifically, this module will help
you to:
• identify the different kinds of meter;
• create rhythmic patterns in duple, triple, and quadruple meters.

Let us start your journey in learning more about Rhythmic Patterns and
Meters.

Let’s Think and Act Now!

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

Using the musical score “Pen Pen De Sarapen”;

1. What kinds of notes and rests are used in the song?

2. How many measures are there in the song?

Listen to a recording of “Chua- ay”. It is a famous folk chant by the Igorots of

Luzon. It is sung by the females of the Igorot tribe in the Mountain Province
as they carry jugs of water on their heads. If anyone in the household is
familiar with the chant, he or she can lead this activity.

4
The Tagalog translation of the chant is:

Siya ay nakatira sa isang bahay kubo

Kubong nakatago sa likod ng bundok
Akyat panaog, pasan ang banga
Hirap na hirap na siyang magdala
Have you seen people creating sounds through their mouths? Do you like
listening to the sounds they create? Sounds like whistling, whining, singing
or breathing. The sound created through the mouth of a person, say for
example that person drowns. The indication that the person is still breathing
is called pulse or beat.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
What is beat?

Beat is the most basic unit of time in music. It is the regular occurring pulse
that you hear and feel in a composition. There are accented and unaccented
beats in a musical composition. The strong beat which is accented is
represented by the symbol (>) and the weak beats or unaccented has no
symbol used.

What is Meter?

Meter comes from the Greek word “metron” which means measure. Meter
is the grouping of notes and rests as units. It may have two, three, or four
beats placed in a measure.

5
Below are the kinds of meter that group notes and rests to form rhythmic
patterns.

1. Duple meter- has two beats in every measure

∣ ∣ ∣
2. Triple meter- has three beats in every measure

∣ ∣ ∣
3. Quadruple meter- has four beats in every measure

∣ ∣ ∣
Rhythmic Syllables

It will be easier for you to read notes if you master the rhythmic syllables of
these symbols. Study the rhythmic syllables of the notes on the table below.

Notes Symbol Rhythmic syllables

whole note pa-a-a-a

half note pa-a

quarter note pa

eighth notes pi-pi

sixteenth notes pi-ri-pi-ri

dotted half note pa-a-a

dotted quarter note pa-i

6
ACTIVITIES

Activity 1.1 Tap or clap the following rhythmic patterns while reciting the
rhythmic syllables.

Activity 1.2 Analyze the musical piece “Harana sa Bukid”, a Tagalog folk
song. Identify the meter of the song. Try to clap the rhythmic patterns in
every measure while reciting the rhythmic syllables of the notes.

Google. com/ search, Musical score with Lyrics. Accessed May 20,2020

7
REMEMBER

1. Rhythmic patterns are formed when notes and rests are grouped
together in a specific meter.
2. The heartbeat of music is called beat.
3. The kinds of meters are Duple, Triple, and Quadruple meters.
4. Measure is the space between two bar lines.
5. Notes have rhythmic syllables and these syllables help you establish
how long the duration of the notes and rests are.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Complete the following rhythmic patterns based on the given meter. Follow
the correct number of beats in every measure. Write your answer on your
music notebook.

1. Duple meter ∣__ ∣ __∣__∣

2. Triple meter ∣ __∣__ ∣ __

3. Quadruple meter ∣ __ ∣ __∣ ∣
