HISTORY (RIPH)

1.Conceptual History
- Conceptual history is an approach to the study of history where the analysis of
language is used in the study of social relations and social conditions of the past. One
could also say that linguistic analysis is the tool and society is the object of inquiry. In
practice that often means investigating the past by focusing on one central social concept,
also termed a key historical concept.
Examples of key historical concepts are words like ‘society’, ‘democracy’, ‘family’,
‘work’ and ‘politics’.
-The method of conceptual history aims at studying societies of the past and social
change by examining how key social and political concepts change their meanings over
time.
-For political science, conceptual history offers a distinct perspective for studying the
activity of politics in theorizing, practices and institutions. This includes the study of
historical cases as well as contemporary conceptual disputes, for example regarding
human rights or the European Union. For history and other fields in the humanities,
conceptual history is a means of historicizing key terms and concepts that guide our
analysis as well as understanding how past actors used language to frame their existence.

2.What are the sources utilized in the recreating the past?

-Historian use sources to create history.Sources are our way of peering into the past,
but the various kinds all present their own benefits and difficulties. The first distinction to
make is between primary and secondary sources
*Primary Sources- first-hand material that stems (roughly) from the time period
that one wants to examine
*Secondary Sources- is an additional step removed from that period – a 'second-
hand' work that is the result of reconstructing and interpreting the past using the
primary material, such as textbooks, articles, and, of course, websites such as this
one.

3.Describe the different periods in Philippine History.

Periods in Philippine History Description

A. Early Philippines Perion,22,000 BCE- - This is the period of dominance of native

1521 AD Filipino culture. During this period, the
islands that composed this country that
would eventually be called the Philippines
were ruled by the barangay system of
politics and government, spoke the varied
but related Malayo-Polynesian languages
(such as Bisaya, Tagalog, Ilocano,
Maguindanao), believed in the indigenous
animistic religion. Foreigners and their
influences (such products and ideas) had
penetrated the archipelago, but these were
only added to the larger native Filipino
culture.

B. Spanish Colonialism Period, 1521-1898 - The period of Hispanization (to become

Spanish-like) of the Philippine islands.
Although the native Filipino culture was
not totally erased, it was combined with a
significant amount of Spanish culture.
Filipinos became Roman Catholics, local
languages accepted numerous Spanish
words and phrases, native clothing was
modified to resemble Hispanic wardrobe,
kitchens cooked Spanish food (such as
caldereta, afritada, pochero), the free
trading economy was replaced by the
galleon monopoly, and the independent
island barangays were united into the single
Spanish colony called Las Islas Filipinas.

C. Period of Filipino Nationalism, 1872- -The period of the development of the

1913 Filipino identity. The previously disunited
people, who saw themselves as separate
ethnic groups unrelated to each other; as
Bisayans only, as Tagalogs only, as
Ilocanos only, began to identify themselves
into the larger group called Filipinos. Then
as a group, they have united to clamor for
changes to the colonial conditions they
have suffered for hundreds of years. This
period was a time for a campaign for these
changes. Early for reforms, later for
independence.

D.American Colonialism Period, 1898- -It is the period of ascendance of the

1946 American flag over these 7000 islands.
When the US politicians determined the
goals of Philippine development. When
American businessmen introduced to
Filipino taste new products. When
American teachers re-educated the Filipino
children. When American missionaries
taught new religions besides Catholicism
and Islam to the Filipinos. It was the time
when Filipinos became little brown
Americans.

E. Japanese Occupation Period, 1941-1945 -The short period of Japanese control of the
Philippines during the Second World War.
It was the time when the Japanese military
ruled the country, and Japanese culture was
introduced, even forced, into the Filipinos.
But it was also a time of resistance by
Filipinos against Japanese rule and
Japanese influences (such as language,
books, products, practices, ideas).

F. Period of the Philippine Republic, 1946- -The period of Philippine independence

present from foreign control. When the country had
finally been set free from successive
colonizers: Spanish, American, and
Japanese; the government is now totally in
the hands of Filipinos. However, it was also
a time of big challenges: recovering from
the devastation of the war, resolving the
conflict between rich and poor, ending a
people’s rebellion, and pursuing socio-
economic development

4.Explain the importance of studying history.

- Some of us have this question, why we need to know History if it is now in the
past? People really don’t understand why history is really important to study. They didn’t
know the impact of the History for us right now.
Studying history gives us knowledge on why our society changes. We know that
history is the study of change. If we understand or study our world that is constantly
changing this will help us interpret the world in its current state.
It helps us better understand the past to predict the future and help us in creating it.
Studying history gives us wide opportunities to better understanding of the past
experiences to count on the great achievements and avoid the horrific mistakes.
If you have question to something like, What is the origin of this thing?,You’ll be
able to understand the origin of something if we study the History, because history can
provide you answers that was on your mind.
If we want to know how and why our world is the way it is today, we have to look to
history for answers.
