Mortality rate, or death rate,[2]:189, 69 is a measure of the number of deaths (in general, or due to a
specific cause) in a particular population, scaled to the size of that population, per unit of time.
Mortality rate is typically expressed in units of deaths per 1,000 individuals per year; thus, a mortality
rate of 9.5 (out of 1,000) in a population of 1,000 would mean 9.5 deaths per year in that entire
population,

Of the roughly 150,000 people who die each day across the globe, [18][19][20] about two thirds—100,000
per day—die of age-related causes.[21] In industrialized nations, the proportion is much higher,
reaching 90%.[21]

The birth rate in a period is the total number of live births per 1,000 population divided by the length
of the period in years.[1]

Another term used interchangeably with 'birth rate' is natality.[4]

When the crude death rate is subtracted from the crude birth rate (CBR), the result is the rate of
natural increase (RNI).[5] This is equal to the rate of population change (excluding migration). [5]

A population is defined as a group of individuals of the same species living and
interbreeding within a given area. Members of a population often rely on the same resources,
are subject to similar environmental constraints, and depend on the availability of other
members to persist over time.
The natural balance (or natural increase) is the difference between the number of births and
the number of deaths recorded over a period. The words "surplus" or "increase" can be used
when the number of births is greater than that of deaths.
