CHAPTER I
This chapter deliver Background Study, Formulation of Problem and Research Objective

1.1. Background Study

English is taught as a foreign language in Indonesia. English's position as a foreign

language is strongly linked to colonialism. Over 350 years, the Dutch colonized Indonesia.
Only a few Indonesians had a proper education during Dutch colonialism. Elite schools only
admitted a few handpicked local children whose parents held prominent government
positions as students. After Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands on August
17, 1945, English became the first foreign language taught in schools, replacing Dutch.
[ CITATION Dar03 \l 1033 ]. Since then, English has been taught as a foreign language in
Indonesia at various educational levels. English, on the other hand, has never been formally
utilized as a means of communication. As a result, outside of classroom learning situations,
Indonesians rarely converse in English. Lack of usage in real-life communication might be
one of the reasons why Indonesians prefer to speak English in a non-standard approach.
When learning English as a foreign language, learners' attitudes play an important
influence. As a result, attitudes and language learning are intimately connected. [ CITATION
DCr03 \l 1033 ] Claims that language attitudes are related to someone’s way feeling and
receiving a language, either their own language or others. These definitions suggest that
attitudes are a significant determinant of a learner's language learning engagement.
Furthermore, while the majority of students have a favorable attitude about EFL, they are
not necessarily dedicated to learning it in out of school. In addition according to [ CITATION
GEB15 \l 1033 ] investigate students attitudes toward EFL in Chile and found that despite the
important of learning English, student do not spend enough time studying English at home
furthermore, they know that school is the place for them to study English but they refuse to
have more hours of English instruction per week
So because the reason above that writer took this aim because the writer want to know
about other factor that might be influence the student attitude toward English Foreign
Language in Indonesia because as we know about the process of teaching and learning
activities in Indonesia are held online at their respective homes during pandemic and also

iii
technology is more complex that everyone can use the internet from anywhere, that might be
influence the student attitude toward English Foreign Language.
1.2. Identification problem

1.2.2. To identify the students’ feeling on learning English Foreign Language on online
conversation
1.2.3. To identify the students’ attitude toward English Foreign Language during
pandemic

iv
CHAPTER II

2.1. Factor that influent student attitude toward EFL

2.1.1. Gender
The most basic stereotypical expectation in gender relation to men and women is
simply that they will be different rather than the same, despite the fact that many local
languages are used in social activities, the view point towards gender may be different
various forms of communicate, gender possibly interpretation reflection of male and
female speeches and their various way of life and attitudes.  According to (nancy, 2010)
on his early research focus on the grammatical and the lexical of language use of each
gender. On his research finding that each gender tent to use different grammatical and
lexical choice. There were also have the differences in the masculine and feminine diction
use by each gender.
Genders have varying levels of drive when it comes to learning a new language.
According to several studies, female students are more motivated than male pupils. On
the research of [ CITATION Fir19 \l 1033 ] indicates that in learning English as a foreign
language, gender has a crucial role in influencing student attitude. Males and females
have different levels of motivation, which impacts their performance in EFL since female
students are more driven than male students.

2.1.2. Language attitude

According to [ CITATION Cha10 \l 1033 ] Language attitude might be a positive or
negative depending how student learn language. That implies a willingness to refuse
positive or negative aspects of language, such as social, personal, contextual, ideas, and
concepts. A successful learner is one who views the target language as having a positive
attitude.
According to [ CITATION Ian15 \l 1033 ] argue that language attitude is an umbrella
term which refers to various attitudinal object, including language, dialect, speech styles,
speakers, communities, language learning and language use. This is also support by the
argument by [CITATION Sam19 \l 1033 ] there are five different characteristic that influence

v
student attitudes, gender, residential location, type of student attend, family affluence and
religion.
On the research of [ CITATION Par18 \l 1033 ] They reached the result Varied groups
of Indonesia adults have different attitudes on language. The first thing he discovers is
that he has a really favorable attitude about Indonesian and English. The student's
preference for Indonesian as a family language is supported by his research. Furthermore,
in the realm of education and social media, both English and Indonesia are equally used.
Second, the study discovered a link between learners' language attitudes about English
and their gender.
Furthermore, according to (Kurniasari. M. D. and Mbato. C. L., 2018), their
beliefs system about the significance of English is influenced by their education and job.
The Indonesian mentality was seen favorably, which must be mastered. Because
Indonesians' opinions about the usage of English and the Indonesian language are
influenced by their educational backgrounds and occupations, linguistic status as an
international language and a national language may be linked.

2.2. Student Attitude toward EFL during Pandemic

Online learning is learning to use technology, for example computer and
smartphone. The behavior of attitude of students can be influenced by online learning by
computer and event of student can be influenced by online learning on smartphone.
According to [CITATION Yav15 \l 1033 ] claims that these indicate that teacher and student
have positive attitudes toward computer-assisted instruction, and they trust their selves to
use computer and student have shown moderate to highly favorable attitude toward e-
learning [ CITATION SSr20 \l 1033 ]

Student can vary depending on the use of technology because of the behavior
using technology itself, but if viewed from one side is that can significantly positive to
improve the students achievement according to Ullah (2017) she claims about the
compute mediated instruction are useful for student’s course work. Moreover, it can be
concluded that incase the students’’ accessibility were made easy toward online learning,
then appropriated attitude of student will be developed to usability. But according to
[CITATION Rah20 \l 1033 ] on his research that show indicated that a change of the learning

vi
system from the face to face to online conversation has impact on student learning
motivation. That changes also have an impact on student’s achievement. These research
also support by [CITATION Hen20 \l 1033 ] on his interview to his research participant from
the first question was to find out participant’s answers about online learning during
pandemic.

For example answer from (AY, Male age 17) “I have to stay at home during the
pandemic. And about my opinion with online learning is not OK. I mean I have some
problem with online learning for example the new application, I need time to adjust
myself.”

On his research finding was the student have a problem about the changing most of
student on his research preferred to have traditional learning instead of online learning.

vii

gender has a crucial role in influencing student attitude. Males and females have different
levels of motivation, which impacts their performance in EFL since female students are
more driven than male students.
In otherwise about the online learning during pandemic the behavior of attitude of
students can be influenced by online learning by computer and e-learning on smartphone.
