Case Study 2

Civil Engineer:
A Manager and Supervisor
I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Over time, every business will eventually expand over a period of time. It is
important to maintain your business financially and manage your personnel properly. In
this study, the main question focused on managing your employees. Our solution is based
on how the engineer manager should manage his business according to the manager's
function. It is also recommended that managers should hire a consultant who has
extensive knowledge of how to properly manage their business. This is a good solution
because some engineers have little or no management knowledge.

II. INTRODUCTION

Managing a business is a difficult task, because you need to consider many things,
and low management skills may cost your business. It is also important to consider that
not all businessmen know what management is. It may be because they have not studied
management in college or have no idea at all before entering the business industry. This
is why most of the time there will be such a problem is because of the lack of knowledge
engineering managers have.

III. BACKGROUND

After passing the civil engineering committee exam, Engr. Romeo

Estabillo established his own construction business. He accepted the contract
to build a house. After that, his business and customers became bigger.
In the beginning, Engr. Estabillo hired 2 assistants. Mr. Silvino
Santiago is his draftsman. He, Mr. Santiago, is an undergraduate student
majoring in civil engineering. He also supervises the workers with Engr.
Estabillo is on their construction site. His second assistant, Mr. Romulo
Mamaril, was assigned to coordinate administrative duties. Engineer
Estabillo also hired two female employees. They were assigned office tasks.
Engineer Estabillo also supervises his new office in the residential area
throughout the year.
A few years later, he checked the payroll and learned that he had hired
twenty full-time employees, plus contract foremen and workers. In 1996,
Engr. Estabillo began to feel that his construction company was constantly
growing. He was contemplating with himself if he shall hire two more Civil
Engineers for his business expansion. He, however, was worrying about how
he may be able to supervise more people effectively.

IV. ALTERNATIVES

1.) Engr. Romeo Estabillo may first hire a consultant to develop his ideas.
2.) Engr. Romeo Estabillo will hire additional civil engineers to meet and
meet the needs of its customers.
3.) Engr. Romeo Estabillo may have meetings with his employees and listen
to their opinions on his plans.

V. PROPOSED SOLUTION
Engr. Estabillo may first hire a consultant to develop his ideas.

Engr. Romeo Estabillo may first seek advice from a consultant about
his plan. His judgment and feelings should not be the basis for his business
decisions, because his decisions will cost him time and money. In addition,
the business consultant will be an important source of his strategic
knowledge to solve this internal problem.
VI. RECOMMENDATION

Suppose I am Engr. Romeo Estabillo, assuming I have doubts about

myself, I would definitely seek advice from a business consultant. In most cases,
by hiring consultants and other experts, the company will be able to save thousands
of dollars instead of hiring full-time employees. With a consultant, my idea as a
business owner will be constructively criticized. Also, with a consultant, future
ideas and procedures for my business will be presented.
