FIRST QUARTER WEEK 4

TOPIC: THE MAP AND ITS LEGENDS

COMPETENCIES/ OBJECTIVES:

1. Familiarize with the signs and symbols found in your community;


2. Recognize the signs and symbols in a map by the following directions; and
3. Appreciate the importance of reading a map.

LET’S START!

A map is an illustration of an area such as a city, a country or a continent. It is a


drawing that gives a special clues about an area.
The word map is originated from the latin word “mappa” which means a “paper” or
“napkin”.
Maps use legends. Legends are signs that explain the symbols seen on a map. Study
and remember these examples:

TRAIN TRACKS

CHURCH AIRPORT

HOSPITAL
SEAPORT

RIVER BRIDGE
ROAD
MOUNTAIN

 What legends have you learned? Which of the things they symbolize can be
found in your community?

The Primary Directions

The four primary directions are


north (N), South (S), East (E) and West
(W).
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The top of the map is always north. The
compass needle always points to the north. At the bottom is the south.

TheSecondary Directions

The secondary directions are:


NE (Northeast)- it is between the north and the east.
SE (Southeast)- It is between the south and the east.
NW (Northwest)- It is between the north and the west.
SW (Southwest)- It is between the south and the west.
Notice that the north and the south are mentioned first before east
and west when using secondary directions.

The Map

This is a map. A map is a flat image of a place. It has legends


and directions. It may show a picture of a community. Some maps
show a place. Others show a products in which the place is known for.
Physical maps on the other hand show lamdforms and water forms.

A person who makes maps is called a cartographer.
Types of Maps
1. Physical Map-Shows landforms and water forms in your community.

2. Political Map-Shows the places,legends, and territorial boundaries of a


country,provinces, capitalss, andd cities can be seen.

Structures and legends

1. Monument- is a statue of a person who has done noble deeds for his/her
community or country. It aims to remind people of his/her greatness. Typically,
the name of the person as well as his/her birth and death along with his/her
contributions are written at the lower part of the monument.

2. Building- Every tow or province has important buildings or structures. The


National Museum of the Philippines, Manila Central Post Offfice, and other
offices that serve as landmarks are found in the City of Manila. In various cities
in Visayas, you will find important building such as the Universities of the
Philippines, Cebu International Convention Center, and many more.

3. Landmark- An example of a landmark in a community is the Mabuhay Rotonda


between the Citt of Manila and Quezon City. Another example is the Lion’s Head
along Kennon Road leading to Baguio City. It is a big lion’s head sculptured from
stone.
