Question-2: Identify any one Indian company that adopted an emergent strategy and how?
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a classic example of an Indian
organization to adopt the emergent strategy. The organization initially set out for the sole
purpose of catering and tourism which later ended up handling the online ticketing operations of
the railways too later.
It was created up by the Ministry of Railways to house the new company's complete catering and
tourism operation, in order to make these services more professional and upgraded via public-
private involvement. Initially, the services started after some time when the internet became
visible, and their digital adventure began with the introduction of the website www.irctc.co.in
which provided the consumer with a web-based interface for reservations of their railway tickets
from their homes. At the time, IRCTC printed tickets and then mailed them to the consumers.
The railways were much relieved by enormous savings in terms of physical, digital and labour
needs.
The major digital thrust began in the year 2005 with the notion of e-tickets in which consumers
could reserve and print their tickets during the train journey directly. IRCTC has created its own
Mobile application, which allows users to buy tickets at their discretion, in view of the growing
market based on online booking and increased usage of mobile applications.
