The Pre-Spanish Period  The Oral Literature of the --
(BC- 1594) precolonial Filipinos bore the
marks of the community and
were highlighted during this
period.
 This is evident in the most
common forms of the oral
literature like riddles,
proverbs, and songs which
seem to assume that the
audience was familiar of the
situations, activities, and
objects in the course of
expressing emotions. This
became the language of daily
life. At this phase of the
literary development, member
of the community was a
potential poet, singer, or
storyteller.
Spanish Period (1565- 18898)  Filipinos embraced the  Ang Doctrina Cristiana by Fr.
Catholic religion, changed Juan De Placencia and Fr.
their names, and got baptized. Domingo Nieva.
 The first Filipino alphabet,
Alibata, was replaced with  Nuestra Señora del Rosario by

became the literary language Tagala (Tagalog vocabulary)

 Ancient literature was

collected and translated to
Tagalog and other dialects.

The Period of Enlightenment (1872-  The Propaganda Movement
1898) happened during this period.
This was spearheaded mostly
by the intellectual middle-class
like Jose Rizal et.al. to seek
reforms and changes.
 This was the period when the
Diariong Tagalog was
established in 1883 which
exposed the the evils of the
 Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo by Dr. Jose
Rizal.
