Mass transfer II (CH3006D)

Assignment 1
1. Assuming the Raoult's law to be valid for the system benzene (A)-ethyl benzene (B) and
the vapor pressures are given by the Antoine equations

2788.51
In PAS = 13.8858 - T− 52.36

3279.47
In PBS = 14.0045- T−60.00
where P is in kPa and T is in K. Construct the T-x-y diagram at 101.3 kPa.

2. An equimolar mixture of n-heptane (A) and n-octane (B) is continuously flash vaporized
at atmospheric pressure to vaporize 60% of the feed. Determine
(a) Composition of the products
(b) Temperature in the separator
(c) The percent of feed to be vaporized to produce a distillate containing 65 mol%
heptane.
The mole fraction of heptane in the liquid and vapor in equilibrium at 101.3 kPa is as
follows:

T, K 398.8 393 388 383 378 371.6

x 0 0.1571 0.312 0.487 0.655 1.0
y 0 0.279 0.492 0.674 0.810 1.0

3. An equimolar mixture of n-heptane and n-octane is subjected to simple distillation so that

the liquid residue has a composition 30 mol% heptane. Determine
(a) the fraction of feed vaporized
(b) the composition of the distillate
Equilibrium data for n-heptane and n-octane at 101.3 kPa:

x 0 0.1571 0.312 0.487 0.655 1.0

y 0 0.279 0.492 0.674 0.810 1.0

4. A mixture containing chlorobenzene and water is being distilled. The liquids may be
assumed immiscible. The distillation is carried out under such condition that the two
liquid layers a present in the still. The vapor pressure data follow:

3295.12
Chlorobenzene: In P S = 13.9926 - T−55.60

3799.887
Water: In P S = 16.26205 - T−46.854
Determine the temperature of distillation and the composition of the vapor if the
pressures 40 kPa.

5. A continuous rectification column is to separate a binary mixture of A and B. The rate of

distillate production is 100 kmol/h and contains 98 mol% A. The mole fraction of A in the
liquid and in the vapour, x and y respectively leaving two adjacent plates in the enriching
section are

x 0.65 0.58
y 0.82 0.78

Assuming that the latent heats of vaporization are the same for all mixtures, and the feed
is saturated liquid, calculate (a) the reflux ratio (b) the vapor rate in the stripping section
in kmol/h

6. A mixture containing 40 mole% A and 60 mole% B is to be separated in a distillation tower

h concentration of A in the distillate is 95% of A and 96% is to be recovered as distillate
produced. The feed is half vapor and the reflux ratio used is 4. The relative volatility of A
to B is 2. Total condenser is employed.
(a) How many theoretical plates are required in each section?
(b) Determine the minimum number of stages graphically and analytically.
