Topic- The Delhi Sultanate
I. Answer the following
1. List the names of 5 dynasties of Delhi Sultanate.
 The period from 1206-1526 is known as the age of Delhi Sultanate.
 Delhi was the capital of Sultans who conquered a large part of the
Indian subcontinent.

 The Slave dynasty


 The Khalji dynasty
 The Tughluq dynasty
 The Sayyid dynasty
 The Lodi dynasty

2. What were the administrative reforms of Ala ud din Khalji?


 He kept a strict control over all the provinces.
 He posted spies in different parts of the empire.
 He curbed the power of the noble.
3. Ala ud din undertook measures to counter Mongols. Give reason.
 New forts were built
 The army was reorganized
 Frontier provinces were placed under efficient commanders

4. What were the military reforms of Ala ud din? (reforms in army)


 He paid his soldiers in cash
 he started branding horses(dagh) to prevent the substitution of good
horses with inferior ones
 a full description (chehra) for each soldier was also kept

5. ‘Muhammad bin Tughluq’s schemes were well conceived but poorly


executed’. Discuss this statement with reference to his transfer of
capital and Introduction to Token currency.

Shift of capital

 In 1327 he decided to shift his capital form Delhi to Devagiri


 which was renamed Daulatabad
 the Sultan felt he will be able to control and administer the empire
better from Daulatabad
 the Mongols were constant threat to Delhi
 he ordered the entire population of Delhi to move to Daulatabad
 people did not want to leave their homes but had to obey
 soon he realized that it was impossible to keep a watch on the northern
frontiers
 so, he ordered a re- shift of the capital
 the failure of the experiment affected the prestige of the empire

Introduction of a token currency

 he introduced token currency


 he had plans to conquer central Asia so he required money
 some historians say that there was a worldwide shortage of silver
 he issued token coins of brass and copper for day to day use
 these coins had the same value as pure silver coins. They could
exchange for silver coins
 people bought brass and copper in bulk and started minting coins
 money lost its value. Kingdom was flooded with forged coins
 this experiment had failed and he had to withdraw issuing the coins
anymore.

6. List the welfare measures done by Firoz Shah Tughluq.


 He was a reformer king
 He did much for the people. He built canals, tanks, wells, hospitals etc
 He established towns like Jaunpur, Firozpur, Firozabad and Hissar Firoza
 He also built educational institutions
 Many Sanskrit texts were translated into Persian and Arabic.
