SECOND PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION 2020-2021

SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS
Two and half hours

Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately.


You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers.

Attempt all questions from section A and any FOUR questions from section B.
All working, including rough work must be clearly shown and must be done on the same
sheet as the rest of the answer.
Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].
Mathematical tables are provided.

Section A (40 marks)

Question 1

a) Find the value of x and y if:

b) Ms Jain opened a recurring deposit account in a bank and deposits ₹300 per month for
fifteen months. If she received ₹ 4740 at the time of maturity find:
i) The total interest earned.
ii) Rate of interest % p.a. [3]

c) From a pack of 30 cards marked 1, 2, 3,….30 all cards whose numbers are multiples of
two are removed. A card is now drawn at random. Find the probability of getting a card
which is: -
i) a prime number less than 10.
ii) a number divisible by 5.
iii) a perfect cube.
iv) a number that is multiple of 6. [4]

Question 2
a) The sum of radius of base and height of solid cylinder is 37 m. If the total surface area of
solid cylinder is 1628 m2, find:
i) Radius of its base.
ii) Cost of painting its total surface at the rate of ₹ 15.10 per square metre. [3]

b) Find a, b, c such that the following numbers are in arithmetic progression:


a, 7, b, 23, c [3]

c) In the given figure ∆ABC is an isosceles triangle with AB = AC.


ABC = 35 .Find BDC and BEC .

a) The polynomial 2 x3 + mx2 + nx − 2 leaves a remainder 7 when divided by [2x – 3] and has
[x + 2] as its factor. Find the value of m and n. [4]

a) Solve the following in-equation and write the solution set:

b) The equation of a line is : 2 x − 2 3 y − 3 = 0 . Find its gradient, inclination and y-intercept.

Question 5

a) In an arithmetic progression, first term is 8, nth term is 33 and sum of first n terms is
123. Find ‘n’ and the common difference. [3]

b) The point Q (3, k) divides line joining P (9, 4) and R (-9, 7). Find:
i) Ratio in which point Q divides the join of points P and R.
ii) The value of k. [3]
c) Given point P (0, 2) and Q (3, 2). Reflect P in line y = 0 to get P’ and reflect Q in origin to
get Q’.
i) Write the co-ordinates of P’ and Q’.
ii) State the geometric name of the figure PQP’Q’.
iii) Name two points from the figure in (ii) which are invariant on reflection in line x = 0. [4]

Question 7
a) Without solving the following equation, find the value of ‘p’ for which the equation has
equal roots.
( p + 6) x2 + ( p − 2) x + 1 = 0 [3]
b) A shopkeeper buys an article with printed price ₹ 5000 from a wholesaler at a discount
of 10% and sells it to the customer at the printed price. If the sales are intra-state and
the rate of GST is 12% find:-
i) Amount of tax (under GST) paid by the shopkeeper to the state government.
ii) Amount of tax received by the central government.
iii) Amount paid by the consumer for the article inclusive of GST. [4]

c) Find the equation of the line passing through the point of intersection of 5x + 2y – 10 = 0
with X – axis and having slope same as that of the line 3x – 7y + 8 = 0. [3]

Question 8
a) A person on tour has ₹ 360 for his expenses. If he extends his tour by four days he has
to cut down daily expenses by ₹ 3. Find the original duration of the tour. [4]

b) Marks obtained by 110 students in English test are given below: [3]

Calculate the mean marks correct to nearest whole number using step deviation method.

c) If ABCD is a parallelogram having A≡(3, 6) , B≡(-3, 1) and D≡(6, 2) find the co-ordinates
of vertex C. [3]

Question 9
a) Ms Shah has recurring deposit account of ₹ 500 per month at 6.5 % p.a. If she gets
₹ 812.50 as interest at the time of maturity find total time (in years) for which the
account was held. [3]

b) In the given figure, PQ // MN. LP : PM = 3 : 5.


Calculate PQ if MN = 4.8 cm.
Find the ratio of area of ∆ LPQ to that of trapezium PMNQ. [4]

c) Some wheat is placed on the floor in a conical shape of diameter 4.8 m. This wheat is
transferred into a cylindrical drum of diameter 2.4 m and height 2 m and is filled
completely. Find the height of the conical shape. [3]

Question 10
a) Factorise the given expression completely: x − 7 x + 14 x − 8

b) In the given figure, ‘O’ is the centre and QR is the diameter.


The tangent at point P meets QR produced at point S.
Find TPQ if PQR = 28 . [3]

c) From the top of a light house AB, 100 m high, the angle of depression of two ships C & D
on opposite sides of it are 38˚ and 45˚ respectively. Find the distance between the two
ships correct to nearest metre. [4]

Question 11

a) Three numbers are in continued proportion. If the mean proportional is 18 and the sum
of first and last is 39, find the numbers. [4]

b) The table below shows scores obtained by 168 shooters in the first round of a shooting
competition, where qualifying score for the next round was scoring more than 55.

Using graph paper draw an ogive for the given distribution taking 2cm = 10 score on one
axis and 2cm = 20 shooters on the other axis. From the ogive determine:
i) the median score.
ii) the number of shooters who qualify for the second round.
iii) Inter quartile range. [6]
