To find the common difference (d),
subtract any term from one that
follows it.

Find the first term and the
common difference of each
arithmetic sequence.

Common difference (d): a2 − a1 = 9 – 4 = 5

these arithmetic sequences.

d = a2 - a1 = - 4 - 1 = - 5

d = a2 - a1 = 23 - 11 = 12
−26, − 21, − 16, − 11, − 6, . . .
The first term of an arithmetic sequence
is (a1) . We add (d) to get the next term.
There is a pattern, therefore there is a
formula we can use to give use any term
that we need without listing the whole
sequence ☺.

3, 7, 11, 15, …. We know 𝑎1 = 3 and d = 4


a1= a1 = 3
a2= a1 +d = 3+4 = 7
a3= a1 +d+d = a+2d = 3+2(4) = 11
a4 = a1 +d+d+d = a+3d = 3+3(4) = 15
The general form of an ARITHMETIC sequence.

First Term: a1
Second Term: a2 = a1 + d
Third Term: a3 = a1 + 2d
Fourth Term: a4 = a1 + 3d
Fifth Term: a5 = a1 + 4d

nth Term: an = a1 + ( n − 1) d
Formula for the nth term of an ARITHMETIC
sequence.

a1 = The 1st term

n = The term number

d = The common difference


Find the 14th term of the
arithmetic sequence

IDENTIFY SOLVE
a1 = 79 an = a1 + ( n − 1) d
d = −4 a32 = 79 + ( 32 − 1)( −4 )
n = 32 a32 = −45
The 32nd term in this
sequence is the number -45.
Find the 14th term of the arithmetic
sequence with first term of 5 and
the common difference is –6.
𝑎1 = 5 and d = -6
You are looking for the

= 5 + -78

In an arithmetic sequence, term 10 is 33 and
term 22 is –3. What are the first four terms of
the sequence?

a22 = a10 + (22 - 10) d -36 = 12d


-3 = 33 + (12) d -3 = d

Then SOLVE for the first term: 33 = 𝑎1 + 9d


33 = 𝑎1 +9(-3)
33 = 𝑎1 –27
60 = 𝑎1
Lastly using the first term and the common difference find the first 4 terms.
The sequence is 60, 57, 54, 51, …….
