CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO ASSESSMENT IN LEARNING

LESSON 1: DEFINITION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS IN ASSESSMENT OF

LEARNING

EVALUATION:

1. Differentiate the terms tests, measurement, assessment, and evaluation in your own words
and illustrate their relationships using a concept map.
a. Test –an efficient strategy used to measure the learners’ knowledge in particular
topic. This is done to see if the learners mastered and absorbed the aptitude or
skills given by a teacher.
b. A measurement is a tool used to determine the attributes or dimensions of an
object, skill, or knowledge. This tool is held standards and can be used to obtain
reliable results . When utilizing appropriately, they precisely assemble
information for teachers and administrators.
c. Assessment – an instrument used to gather information by giving tests,
conducting interviews, and observing behaviour. The assessment ought to be
carefully arranged and managed to guarantee its unwavering quality and validity.
An assessment must provide consistent results and it must be measure what is
claims to measure.
d. Evaluation – is the process of using the measurement gathered in the assessment.
Teachers use this information to judge the relationship between what was
intended by the instruction and was learned. It also determined what students
know and understand, how far they have progressed and how fast, and how their
scores and progress compare to those of other students.

I. Why do teachers evaluate and assess in their classrooms? Provide situations to

visualize your points.
Answer: For me, teachers provide assessment and evaluation to find out what
their students' qualities are, in which aspects they are trained, where they have
shortcomings, or things they still need to learn to improve their knowledge and
skills. Here we will also find out if a teacher's instruction is appropriate or
compatible with students. This concept is also to avoid teaching students what
they already know and teach what they do not understand in a way that will best
respond to. Teachers who have a clear understanding of how and why these
issues are important will find changes and give them a betterment
understanding of their students and better opportunities to help their students
achieve academic success.

Situation: In an organic chemistry class, their teachers gave an exam after 30

minutes of discussion about the elements' Periodic table. After checking papers,
the teacher found out that only a few of them passed the said test, and many are
below the passing grade. So the teachers realized that most of his / her students
found difficulties in his lessons. So he decided to appropriately teach the students
and extend the time intended to understand the lesson. The teacher will give
many more examples of why the elements are group according to their
properties so that they are not bored and not be frustrated with the knowledge
they are not yet prepared for.

II. List down three (3) activities or processes involved in each term.

1.Measurement

(a) Oral questioning ( Subjective- the teacher is the one who give a score)

(b) Standardized test ( objective – you score will base on the result)

(c) Student’s height measures in centimetres.

2.Assessment

(a) Students have written activities about solar system

(b) Teacher assigned the science class to have a role playing about society in modern world.

(c) Science class conducts experiment about an artificial volcanic

eruption

3. Evaluation

(a) Joseph observed an experiment about banana cake making.

(b) Teacher Liz conduct an interview about the insights on same-sex marriage to her students

(c) Teacher Gino gave diagnostic test to his students

III. Interview a high school or elementary teacher available only in your community and
find out his/her experiences in assessing students’/pupils’ performance describing how to test,
measurement, assessment, and evaluation took place. Write a reflection on this activity.
