Understanding Multimedia System

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. appreciate Multimedia System and Understand its theory by identifying its
characteristics and elements.
2. understand the Color theory by examining color dimensions, familiarizing color
neutrals, concepts and different color schemes. Analyze and distinguishing the qualities
of a good photo, shape, line, pattern, texture, size, and space to a photo.

▪ What is Multimedia

Multimedia
Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio, video, and
animation in addition to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics drawings, and images).

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings,
still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of
information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.

Derived from the word “Multi” and “Media”.

◌ Multi
- Many, Multiple.

◌ Media
-Tools that is used to represent or do a certain thing, delivery medium, a form of
mass communication – newspaper, magazine / tv.
-Distribution tool & information presentation – text, graphic, voice, images, music
and etc.

Elements of multimedia:

Text
A broad term for something that contains words to express something. Text is the
most basic element of multimedia. A good choice of words could help convey the intended
message to the users (keywords). Used in contents, menus, navigational buttons.

Graphics
A Two-dimensional figure or illustration. Could be produced manually (by drawing,
painting, carving, etc.) or by computer graphics technology. Used in multimedia to show
more clearly what a particular information is all about (diagrams, picture).

Audio
Produced by vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing. In multimedia, audio
could come in the form of speech, sound effects and also music score.

Animation
The illusion of motion created by the consecutive display of images of static elements. In
multimedia, animation is used to further enhance / enriched the experience of the user to
further understand the information conveyed to them.

Video
Is the technology of capturing, recording, processing, transmitting, and reconstructing
moving pictures? Video is more towards photo realistic image sequence / live recording as
in comparison to animation. Video also takes a lot of storage space. So, plan carefully before
you are going to use it.
Interactive multimedia:

Hyper media
A combination of hypertext, graphics, audio, video, (linked elements) and
interactivity culminating in a complete, non-linear computer-based experience.

Use to merge multimedia elements (text, audio, graphic, animation, video) into a project.
Designed to manage individual multimedia elements and provide user interaction.

Importance of Multimedia in Business

These are important because:


◍ In business, sales, training, teaching, lecturing and generally to entertain an
audience or customer.
◍ It allows us to lecture in front of audiences and to present our product or project.
◍ We have use the multimedia in business marketing to persuade the customers to
buy us products.
◍ In business, we have different customers we have teenagers, adults, middle-aged
and elderly people and many.

These are important because:
◍ Schools are encouraging teachers to use multimedia in line with their teaching to
create an interest for children.

These are important because:
◍ The wireless is at anywhere and anytime, because that can give the people at any
moment to research.
◍ At a big mall, you can find an information kiosk anywhere, it can guide you to
wherever you want to go.

Importance of Multimedia in Virtual Reality

These are important because:


◌ Virtual reality is an interactive multimedia in its fullest extension.
◌ It is often used to describe a wide variety of applications commonly associated with
immersive, highly visual and 3D environments.
◌ Simulation environment can be similar to the real world.
◌ For example, piloting an aircraft or combat training, it can be significantly different
from the reality as in virtual reality games.
Conclusion:

◌ We will have more students/people who are more excellent speakers, and lecturers will
attend in training in the future.

It is extensively used in the field of education and training. The multimedia integrates all of them
in one system.

It is used in the field of mass media i.e. journalism, in various magazines and newspapers that are
published periodically. Examples of Mass Media:

One of the most exciting applications of multimedia is games.

Roles & Responsibilities


1. Project Manager

The Project Manager is responsible for:


◌ The overall development, implementation and day to day operation of the project.
◌ The design and management of a project.
◌ Understanding the strengths and limitations of hardware and software.
◌ Ensuring people skill and organizational skills.
◌ Conveying information between the team and the client.

2. Multimedia Designer

This team consists of:


Graphics designers, illustrators, animators and image processing specialists who deal with
visuals, thereby making the project appealing and aesthetic.
◍ Instructional designers, who make sure that the subject matter is presented clearly for the
target audience.
◍ Interface designers, who devise the navigational pathways and content maps.
◍ Information designers, who structure content, determine user pathways and feedback and
select presentation media.

3. Interface Designer Multimedia


An Interface Designer is responsible for:
◍ Creating software device that organizes content, allows users to access or modify
content and present that content on the screen.
◍ Building a user-friendly interface.

4. Programmer Multimedia

Multimedia Programmer also called Software Engineer


◍ Integrates all the multimedia elements into a seamless project, using authoring
systems or programming languages.
◍ Writes codes for the display of multimedia elements and to control various peripheral
devices.
◍ Manage timings, transitions and record keeping.

5. Writer Video Specialist

A Multimedia Writer is responsible for:
◍ Creating characters, actions, point of view and interactivity.
◍ Writing proposals and test screens.
◍ Scripting voice-overs and actors narrations.
A Video Specialist need to understand:
◍ The delivery of video files on CD, DVD or the web.
◍ How to shoot quality video.
◍ How to transfer the video footage to a computer.
◍ How to edit the footage down to a final product using digital nonlinear editing system
(NLE).

6. Audio Specialist

An Audio Specialist is responsible for:


◍ Locating and selecting suitable music talent.
◍ Scheduling recording sessions.
◍ Digitizing and editing recorded material into computer files.

7. Producer for the Web

Multimedia Producer for the Web


◍ Web site producers put together a coordinated set of pages for the web.
◍ They also co-ordinate updates and changes.
