Because of her delicate health, Princess Likelike was sent to the Big Island to live with
relatives in the dry climate of Kona. At the age of 6, she returned to Honolulu to start her
formal education. She was first taught by Roman Catholic sisters, and then tutored by the
missionaries, Amos and Sybil Cook, of Kawaiahao Church.
When Likelike was 19 years old, she married Archibald Scott Cleghorn, the General of
Immigration. The wedding was held at Washington Place, the home of her sister,
Liliuokalani, and her husband, John Dominis.
Likelike’s only child, Princess Kaiulani, was born on October 16, 1876. Her godmother’s gift
to Kaiulani was ten acres of land in Waikiki, where a beautiful, fine home was built. The
property was called “Ainahau” or Land of the Hau Tree because the home was kept so cool
and pleasant from the fresh breezes that blew down from the mountains. At Ainahau, a
variety of plants and flowers grew around the grounds.
Princess Likelike died of a mysterious ailment on February 2, 1887. The people mourned her
death and brought baskets of her favorite flower, the gardenia, to adorn her casket.
