LESSON 4: WHO IS AN ARTIST?

ANALYSIS:

This may be just a hypothetical conversation between Leonardo and Michelangelo in terms of their art-making but
the contrast tells us a lot about their individual approach toward the artistic process.

a. If you can meet Leonardo da Vinci today, what kind of person do you think you would encounter? Based on the
comic strip above. write your assumptions below:

-Leonardo da Vinci is not my favorite Renaissance artist, although I wouldn’t deny him the accolades received
through time. I have no doubt that he was a deep-thinking and very intelligent person, which makes me wonder
whether he was better respected in society because he was the son of a prominent notary? Jan van Eyck, a Dutch
renaissance artist was a more skilled, and thought-provoking artist.

b. How about Michelangelo? What type of personality does he have? Briefly describe him from what you have read
in the strip.

-He was a genius and a real renaissance man with really varied interests and skills. He was harsh on himself and his
work. He was often dissatisfied and known for his critical, volatile moods. Despite, or maybe because of his
interesting personality, Italians adored Michelangelo, both during his time and after.

c. How do you think can artists use rivalry constructively? How about envy? How can it be used positively.

Rivalry in Arts can help give a competitive drive to develop one's art style and skills. It can become a lifetime cycle
of an artist trying to outdo his rival, which leads to opportunities for improvements. Envy is a feeling of discontented
or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck. So, it a feeling you would never want
to have. It can be used positively, Impossible, resentment is the feeling of bitterness or indignation at having been
treated unfairly. This kind of feeling only produces hate, which is very destructive to the human heart and spirit. We
all know that hate is difficult to control and have seen its results.

or skills and even interests List them below.

artworks based on based on originality and innovation. Successful artists take the time to develop their creative,
career and financial art business plans. They also master the art of discipline to integrate proactive weekly, daily,
and hourly activities that will produce results. “That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence
moves too. I always feel proud and inspired every time I hear or see their paintings.

you reflect on the reality of physical limitations (or even mental, e.g. dyslexia depression, achizophrenia) and the
challenge that this poses to artists?

-Chuck close, the artist, experienced spinal blood clot that left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. However
due to the fact he has this fiery determination he developed a brush to his wrist and fore that allowed him to continue
working or painting. With determination in every heart of ours
