Generating Patterns: Find the first four terms of the sequence an = 2n + 1.

Solution: To find the first four term,
n = 1, a1 = 2(1) + 1 = 2+1 = 3 n = 2 , a 2 = 2(2) + 1 = 4+1 = 5
n = 3 , a3= 2(3) + 1 = 6+1 = 7 n = 4 , a4= 2(4)+ 1= 8+1 = 9
Therefore, First fourth term: 3,5,7,9
Finding Rules: Examples: 0, 3, 8, 15, 24, 35, …
n=1, (1)2-1=0, n=2, (2)2-1=3, n=3, (3)2-1=8,
n=4, (4) -1=15, n=5, (5) -1=24, n=6, (6)2-1=35
2 2

Rule: an= n2-1

Illustrating Arithmetic Sequence:
Formula: an = a1 + (n-1)d where d= an-a(n-1)
Example: Finding the common difference of a5=16 and a6=22
Solution: d= an-a(n-1) , d= a6-a5= 22-16=6 d=6
Finding the common difference of 3x, 3x+3, 3x+6, 3x+9,….
Solution: d= an-a(n-1) =, d= a2-a(2-1)= a2-a1
d=(3x+3) - (3x)= 3x+3-3x = 3 , d=3

A) 0 B) 2 C) 4 D) 6

Finding the nth term of Arithmetic Sequence

Example: Find the 30th term of arithmetic sequence of 2, 6, 10, 14,…..
Find the common difference : d= 6-2= 4, d=4
a1= 2, d= 4, an= a1+ (n-1)d
an= 2+ (n-1)4, an=2+ 4n-4,Then an=4n-2
Then, a30= 4(30)-2=120-2=118, Then a30=118
Arithmetic Means:
Insert three arithmetic means between 1 and 21

Solution: 1, ________ , ________ , ________ , 21

a1 a2 a3 a4 a5
a1 = 1, a5 = 21
an= a1+ (n-1)d, a5= 1+ (5-1)d, Then 21= 1+4d, 21-1= 4d, 20=4d, d=5
a2= 1+ 5= 6
a3=a2+ 5= 6+5= 11
a4=a3+5 = 11+5 = 16

Arithmetic Sums of Arithmetic Sequence
When the first term and last term given;
Formula: Sn= n(a1+an)/2
Example : Find the arithmetic sums of an arithmetic sequence whose a1=2 and a30=118.
Solution:
S30= 30(2+118)/2
S30=30(120)/2= 1800
When the last term is not given;
Formula: Sn= n(a1+(a1+(n-1)d))/2
Sn= n(2a1+(n-1)d)/2
Example: Find the arithmetic sums of the first fifty terms of an arithmetic sequence whose first term is
5 and d= 3.
Solution:
Sn= n(2a1+(n-1)d)/2
S50= 50(2(5)+(50-1)3)/2
S50= 50(10+(49)3)/2
S50= 50(157)/2
S50= 3925
