ABSTRACT

Wattpad is the world`s largest community for discovering and sharing

stories. It’s a new form of entertainment connecting readers and writers

through storytelling, and the best of all its free. With thousands of new

stories added every day, an incredibly active community of readers and the

ability to read on your computer, phone and tablet. Wattpad is a place offers

social and mobile experience.

The researchers also want to investigate the comparison of English

Wattpad readers and non-readers in their reading comprehension of the

senior- high students. This study carefully planned for the students to cope

the disadvantage of reading Wattpad that may affect to their studies. This

really wants to know what would be possible reasons why their reading

comprehension is high or low.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

In this generation most of the students are preferred to read online

stories than books. Not only because it is connected to your phone, it has

also lots of different stories and you can carry it wherever you are. Wattpad

is an application that the students used to kill from getting bored and

community for readers and writers where one can discover new user-

generated stories, spanning across different genres including classics,

general fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction, poetry, spiritual, teen fiction

among others. It aims at removing the traditional barriers between leaders

and writers by building social communities around the stories.

Wattpad provides an opportunity to the writer to showcase their

masterpiece and help their work reach many people around the world who

also loves reading online. Readers were able to interact with the writer and

share their opinions to fellow readers through the comment section on the

specific page where the stories have been posted.

Wattpad originated in 2006, as the result of collaboration between

Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen. In February 2007, Wattpad announced the

addition over 17,000 e-books from project Gutenberg making them available

to mobile application had been downloaded 5 million times.

Senior high school students can relate their lives in some Wattpad

stories because some of them are relatable according their age and to their

personal life issues. Students will encounter stories that made them realized

the reality of life and some stories that can kill their boredom and open their

mind to widen their imagination to become created according to Ramdar-

shan Bold,2018. Wattpad offers many new possibilities for enriching

reading and writing experiences. It offers a free digital environment,

feedback, and an experimental environment for new and even experienced

writers.

Compare to the non-readers, Wattpad readers has an advantage when

it comes to reading comprehension because they didn’t stop learning and

they encounter new words that help them to be aware of how to read exactly

without worrying. Non-readers tend to worry about their sentence

construction as well as the spelling especially to the students who are in

school and sometimes it can affect their learning process. Students who read

a lot has a good sentence construction that they can write an essay with good

English and sentence construction. They can say words without hesitation

and bring confidence to their works. Every student that are engage in reading

has a better understanding and want more and more to know about the story

they read. In an instance, they find way to read in the quiet places and find

peace alone. Unlike to the non-Wattpad reader, they used their free time to

talk with friends and sometimes playing video games. Sometimes it can

cause confusion if the one who reads a lot say something to the non-readers

and they didn’t understand, non-readers called them “weird”, they get

defensive about why they don’t read but in reality, it is the product of the

reader’s imagination, they can create great things such as they can

communicate effectively through the help of reading. Wattpad features a

wide range of genres, included fantasy, romance classics, science fiction,

horror, spiritual and others (Wattpad 2018).

Wattpad readers has a wide imagination compared to the non- readers

because they didn’t stop learning and they use their free time to get

information from reading. Non- reader relies on the given answers provided

by the dictionary or other sources and they will learn less compared to the

one who reads.

The purpose of this study is to see the Comparison of English Wattpad

Readers and non-readers in Reading Comprehension of Selected Senior

High students in Mary the Queen College of Quezon City, S.Y. 2019-2020.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Wattpad connects a global community of million readers and writers

through the power of story with different genres whether it is historical,

fiction, non-fiction, poetry and others. It is a new form of entertainment

connecting readers and writers through storytelling and best of all it is free.

Anyone can access to the application through their mobile phones, tablets

and computer. Student read the stories wherever they are or sometimes they

used it as their pass-time when they are bored. And after reading some of the

stories, they will share it to their friends how beautiful the story was and

sometimes they share it to the non-reader ones. But non- reader ones find it

boring to read so they prefer to listen to someone who shared the stories.

Wattpad readers who are making reading a habit will gain more knowledge

and have better understanding compared to the non-reader students.

The study really wants to know if the Wattpad readers has a high level

of reading comprehension than the non- readers in selected Senior high

school students of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City. S.Y. 2019-

2020.

The paradigm of this study shows the input, it states the profile of the

respondents in terms of age, sex, year and strand. The benefit of reading

Wattpad stories and the comparison among Wattpad readers and non-

readers.

The process that the researcher used are descriptive method, a survey

questionnaire that conduct to the selected students of Mary the Queen

College of students S.Y. 2019-2020.

The outcomes of this study are to propose Seminar awareness to the

School Management to the benefit of the students in their reading

comprehension. The seminar will be added during English month. It

involves writing in the process of reading. Re-telling the stories, it helps the

student to become a better reader and providing free reading materials

according to the genre of their interest.

In this study, the researchers want to find out the comparison of

English Wattpad readers and non-readers in reading comprehension of the

selected Senior high students of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City

S.Y.2019-2020.

This study includes the following

The researcher has formulated the following assumption:

1. The comparison of the respondents be described in reading English

Wattpad.

2. Reading English Wattpad is additional tool in reading comprehension.

3. Students who read English Wattpad have a high level of reading

comprehension than non-readers.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to determine the Comparison of English

Wattpad readers and non-readers in reading comprehension of selected

Senior high school students of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City S.Y.

2019-2020. This study may benefit the following:

Students. It will widen their imagination through reading Wattpad stories.

Parents. This study will help them to encourage their children to read

because it builds their reading comprehension to the high level.

Teachers. They may help their students to gain interest in reading and

concentrate to their studies as well.

School Administrators. This may help their subordinates especially to the

students of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City about the comparison of

readers and non- readers.

Future researchers. For them to have an idea based on the result of the

previous study that are conducted. If they will make plan to make research

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This descriptive research method is to compare the English Wattpad

readers and non- readers in reading comprehension. It includes to measure

the level of reading comprehension of thirty (30) English Wattpad reader

and thirty (30) non- readers of selected senior high students of Mary the

Queen College of Quezon City S.Y 2019-2020.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Comparison- is the act of finding out the differences and similarities

between two or more things.

Wattpad- is an application that being enjoy by the students and the

community for readers and writers where one can discover new user-

generated stories, spanning across different genres including classics,

general fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction, poetry, spiritual, teen fiction

etc.

Reading comprehension- is the ability to process text, understand its

meaning, and to integrate with what the reader already knows.

Advantage- refers to a factor or circumstance of benefit to its possessor.

Entertainment- refers to the action of providing or being provided with

amusement or enjoyment.

Stories- An account of past events in someone’s life or in the evolution of

something.

Readers- a person who reads or who is fond of reading.

Non-readers- a person who cannot and does not read.

Genre- is the classification of creative works according to their similarities.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the gathered researchers from different sources,

these studies will be used as a guide and support to our research. The related

literature starts with the information about Wattpad as well the comparison

of English Wattpad readers and non- readers.

LOCAL LITERATURE

“In this era when access to knowledge and information is just a touch

away delivery of education has dramatically transformed there is so much

talk about virtual schooling and indeed has been what many schools,

colleges and universities worldwide are trying to face as the greatest

challenge of the 21st century teaching and learning. In addition, the

Reading is a basic skill which should not be compromised in a

humane society. Reading instruction should be given emphasis and must be

prioritized by a responsible government. In this age of information where

morality is not enough to communicate to the world anymore, quality

reading instruction among public schools should be a top priority. We

cannot afford to raise a generation of non-readers. (eduTopia 2015)

Wattpad is positioning itself as a new storytelling and consumption

platform for readers who want deeper interaction. Reading is shifting more

and more to e-readers, with at least one in five Americans read an e-book in

the last year, much of that consumption is on mobile devices; 80% of

activity on Wattpad is mobile. (JORDAN AARON, [2015] Wattpad is the

most active social media site you've never heard of).

The other advantage of Wattpad is that students also develop a love

for writing. This avenue can be used as an educational tool for sentence

construction, plot development, grammar and proofreading, and the like.

Wattpad as the platform that appealed to most Filipino writers under a

certain niche, contributed a huge part in keeping the genre alive and well in

the country. For the then-young generation of writers that grew up in the

community, it was a specific kind of blessing. Reaching an audience beyond

our group of close friends felt far-fetched before, but Wattpad handed us a

ticket to accessing an audience that is as big as the rest of the world, along

with the wild possibilities that offering our words to them could bring. The

platform gave us its own brand of bravery. (JELOU GALANG [2018]

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Wattpad was created in Toronto in 2006 by two engineers, Allen Lau

and Ivan Yuen. Lau and Yuen were conscious of two behavioral

characteristics of their generation: they like reading and they are constantly

glued to their mobile phones. What is more, they sensed that the technology

which existed at that time did not satisfy the need to read on mobile phones.

That’s how they ended up creating a platform for ‘mobile reading’. (JUAN

LUIS SUÁREZ 2017; Wattpad and the future of Modern Languages

research.

According to MICHAEL (2016), if you don’t know what Wattpad is,

it’s a system that allows virtually anyone to publish almost any genre of

work for free. Although Wattpad does not pay its authors like a publishing

house does, there are still a wide range of benefits for using it as a new

writer. In fact, it’s where I am going to publish my first novel as soon as it’s

done.

According to RENATA (2017) Wattpad does not exactly meet the

criteria of traditional literature. It is accessed on mobile phones; its

community has almost global dimensions; it operates according to the

characteristics of a social network; it represents the concepts of trans media,

intermediately and convergence, which Henry Jenkins and others have

theorized about; it has developed a multichannel network through Wattpad

Studios and it channels the stories which show most potential towards the

traditional publishing industry, cinema and TV, respectively. However, all

Readers share feelings, thoughts and criticisms with one another

and authors at the social network, sometimes shaping fates of characters or

directions of stories. Readers are free to wait until books are complete and

then binge on chapter after chapter, but that is rarely the case at Wattpad.

The most common question fired off at the service was said to be "When

will the next chapter be released?" (GLENN CHAPMAN 2014)

Wattpad also offers reading opportunities and innovations; for example,

it features readers’ views on the chapters of a book and suggestions for new

sections of texts. It also allows users to read and write texts in different

contexts. It features a wide range of genres, including action, general fiction,

paranormal, mystery/thriller, spiritual, horror, werewolves, fantasy, humor,

young chick lit, romance, classics, vampires, science fiction, adventure,

teenage fiction, random, fan fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction.

"In the Philippines the ability to read and write is a priority, so any

effort to promote literacy by the government, organizations, or even private

individuals is celebrated. “ It is through Literacy that one is empowered to

interact in his community and realizes his worth, status can do and

eventually make him do things that contribute in sustainable development of

his society,” said Department of Education’s (DepEd) literacy Coordinating

Teachers and students alike should as often as possible to listen to

English television news and movies to improve their diction and

In the study the “Wattyfever”: Constructs of Wattpad Readers on

Wattpad’s Role in their Lives (CONTRERAS, GONZAGA, TROVELA and

KAGAOAN, 2015) the researchers found out that Wattpad has become part

of the participant-readers lives. Wattpad appears to be playing a big role not

just as a medium for reading but also as a medium that gratifies the

participant’s emotional and cognitive needs and wants. Despite Wattpad

being an online library of millions of fiction stories, the things that it imparts

on the readers prove to be significant and can applied in reality.

In the blog of GABINETE (2016) she stated that that teens

somewhat engaged to Wattpad because they can easily download this

application in their phones and just log in them then the stories are available

to read for free. Teens today who are reading in Wattpad specially those are

already engaged to its stories during class hour. Keeping their phone out of

sight of their teacher just to continue the beautiful story they read on. But

students not always safe reading Wattpad during class hour. Sometimes

being caught in action if the teacher has an eagle eye

According to MHARIEMAR JAGUIT, in her study entitled

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wattpad (2015) ‘Wattpad is a place to

discover and share stories: a social platform that connects people through

words. It is a community that spans borders, interests, and languages. With

Wattpad, anyone can read or write on any device such as phones, tablet, or

computer. This online entertainment is getting stronger and wider most of

the viewer are teens commonly students.’ Wattpad is a good application for

those teenagers who aim to enhance their writing, reading, comprehension,

and creative skills.

FOREIGN STUDIES

An emphasis of reading and comprehending challenging texts will

be placed on students. Critical reading will be paramount for students to

make adequate academic progress in school and on standardized tests.

NASIM, AND IQBAL (2014) state, “If a student is good at reading,

he will make good grades otherwise he will stay low in the order of merit."

HEMUS (2014) wrote that Wattpad has found its niche in the

online reading setting. According to its official website www.wattpad.com.

Wattpad is the world’s largest community for discovering and sharing

stories.

According to Wattpad’s Head of Content, ASHLEIGH GARDNER,


‘Wattpad is social network and not a publishing platform.’ (Gardner, 2014)
She points out that 90 per cent of Wattpad’s users are readers, compared to
10 per cent who are writers (Gardner, 2014). As outlined above, these
readers use the site not only to access content to read, but to engage in
discussion with the writers they read.

Fans of Wattpad create the ambience for the remix culture which
enables them to create book-trailers, fan-art, story cover and social-media
accounts entitled for the fictional characters of their favorite stories. Through
Wattpad writing contests publishing companies discover new emerging
writers. Wattpad also influence the money-earning factor as writers’ insert
ads between chapters in their story. Wattpad also influences the film,
television, print and digital as to the fact being the main source of pushing
though these things. Millennials find the cure for their procrastinating
activity by indulging reading or writing a Wattpad story. For most of
Wattpad users, the platform influenced many aspects in the society.

RELEVANCE OF THE REVIEWED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

TO PRESENT STUDY

This study excels on investigating the comparison of reading

comprehension in the 21st century learners wherein it contributes their

activity on reading Wattpad, to be able to be interested in using online world

as the main channel of the readers. Studying the literature of both foreign

and local gives idea to researcher of what aspects that Wattpad contributes to

the students.

The relevance of present studies reviewed literature is that Wattpad

makes a good habit on reading skills of the learner and creativity enhance

that also gain the positive outlook in their vocabulary.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

Research Design

This study is a descriptive method because this research needs to

gather and collect Data to test and the purpose of the study. The survey

collects and analyze date in the Senior High school of Mary the Queen

college of Quezon City S.Y. 2019-2020. The study utilizing a survey

questionnaire about the comparison of thirty (30) English Wattpad readers

and thirty (30) non-readers in reading comprehension. This help the

researchers to determine the good benefit of reading Wattpad.

Respondents of the Study

The data of this study is gathered from selected students of Senior

High Schools of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City S.Y. 2019-2020

Sampling Technique

The researchers work is concern with selected Senior High School

students of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City to conduct a survey

with the school administration permission particularly the principal's office

and teachers of Senior High School students. The students were chosen as

participants of the study based on the title of the study.

Instrument Used

To get the best result of the study so it needed appropriate and

accurate data. The data of this study were about the comparison of English

Wattpad readers and non-readers to reading comprehension. The researcher

used survey questionnaire as the instrument for collecting data to be able to

find the comparison of English Wattpad readers and non-readers in reading

comprehension of selected students of Senior high school of Mary the Queen

College of Quezon City.

Construction Used

The researcher focuses on the 60 respondents of Senior High School

of Mary the Queen College of Quezon City wherein the part of questionnaire

asked the students profile such as age, gender, strand and year level. On its

second part, the test is to measure the comparison of English Wattpad

readers and non-readers in reading comprehension.

Validation of the Instrument

To validate the instrument prepared by the researchers the

questionnaire was submitted to the thesis adviser for suggestion, comments

and corrections. The researchers seek help from professors to check and

improve the questionnaire that will fits on topic and the perception of the

students.

Administration and Retrieval of the Instrument

The instrument prepared by the researcher was submitted to the thesis

adviser for correction in order to design the problem to the question and

statement to make the instrument valid and reliable to the level of the

respondents and title of the research.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The statistical tools were used by the researchers to analyze and interpret the

data gathered from the respondent:

This chapter deals with the presentation, analysis, and

interpretation of data. The descriptive survey was utilized in this study since

it sought to find out the comparison of English Wattpad readers and non-

readers in reading comprehension of selected senior high students of Mary

the Queen College of Quezon City S.Y. 2019-2020.

of the students says that they read Wattpad stories because it gives

satisfaction which is 53 or 88% followed by it gives happiness which

43% and others such as it kills boredom and relate in the story is 7 to

12%.

stories. Respondents got 51 or 85% agreed that the positive effect

about reading Wattpad stories is it gives moral lesson. 5 or 8% of the

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains the findings obtained, states conclusions

drawn from the findings, and offer recommendations based on the problems

identified for further studies and investigations.

Summary of Findings

From the analysis of data and results obtained in the previous chapter,

the following is summarized as follows:

1. Wattpad readers are mostly female whose ages fall between pre-

teenage and early 20’s.

2. The respondent personal interest in reading and writing are also

triggered them to read.

3. Respondents, who also aspire to become writers engaged on Wattpad

as well to have an idea on how to write stories.

4. Social media, bore dome, free cost and convenience surfaced as

triggering factors.

5. The continuous engagement of the respondents on Wattpad leads

them to become addicted to it.

6. This study does not show that reading Wattpad has ability to increase

reading comprehension of the respondents.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusions, the researchers found out that Wattpad has become part

of respondent-readers lives. Wattpad appears to be playing a big role not just

as a medium for reading but also as a medium that gratifies the participants`

emotional and cognitive needs and wants. Despite, Wattpad being an online

library of millions of fiction stories, the things that it imparts on the readers

prove the significant and applied in reality.

Therefore, the researchers conclude that English Wattpad is a good

effect on the students on how they spent their spare time. It helps them to

learn new words. Wattpad is also serves as good place to discover and share

stories for teens. Wattpad considered as social platform that connects people

through words wherein students could express their emotions. This study

shows that no evidence that Wattpad helps students in their reading

comprehension.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations are offered for the improvement of this


study:

1. To conduct a follow up study using quantitative approach that will

survey Wattpad readers on the effect of Wattpad in their lives.

2. To make qualitative research that will focus on Wattpad writers since

this study focuses on Wattpad readers.
