Activity 02 – Descriptive Statistics (Describing Data Sets)

Name, Course, Year & Section:

INSTRUCTION. Perform the following items and provide necessary calculations for
your solution.

1. The following are the ignition times of certain upholstery materials exposed to a
flame (given to the nearest hundredth of a second): Allot five (5) pages for your
solution in this item. 1 page per required statement

a) Draw the stem and leaf plot of these data.

b) Determine the sample mean, sample median, sample variance and
sample standard deviation for the ungrouped data.
c) Using the raw (ungrouped) data, construct a box and whisker plot
showing the quartiles of the distribution of the ignition time. Support
your illustration by showing the manual calculation for the necessary
quartile and interquartile of the raw data.
d) Group these figures into a table with a suitable number of equal classes
and construct a histogram.
e) Determine the sample mean, sample median, sample variance and
sample standard deviation for the grouped data.

(Note: Follow the format of calculation and presentation in a table for grouped data
located on page 35 of the given reference book: Probability and Statistics for Engineers
by Johnson, Freund and Miller)

2. The following table gives the number of pedestrians, classified according to age
group and sex, killed in fatal road accidents in England in 1922.
a) Approximate the sample means of the ages of the males.
b) Approximate the sample means of the ages of the females.
c) Approximate the quartiles of the males killed.

Construct a Pareto diagram showing the step-by-step procedure wherein the

“causes” will be plotted in the horizontal axis. Provide all the necessary
computations and illustration upon doing so. Present your solution and diagram
in another page for this item.

4. For instance, to determine the relationship between the daily mid-day

temperature (measured in degree Celsius) and the number of defective parts
produced during that day, a company recorded the data presented in the table
below. For this data set, xi represents the temperature in degrees Celsius and y i
the number of defective parts produced on day i.
a) Illustrate the given data set in a scatter diagram.
b) Describe the behavior of the diagram by determining the sample
correlation coefficient.
