Technical Service Bulletin

Kia Motors Logo 4/C - Medium

SUBJECT:
GDS TPMS INFORMATION AND BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
This bulletin provides information relating to some new TPMS systems used on late model
Kia vehicles, as well as tips to increase understanding of some aspects of our TPMS
systems. This bulletin also provides some basic instructions for using the GDS TPMS
module. For additional information and instructions on the use of the GDS TPMS module,
please see the User Guide from the Home Page of your GDS.

TPMS Quick Tips

1. If the tire low pressure warning light (tread lamp) illuminates on a Low Line system, inspect the
pressure of all four tires. The tires may have been rotated after the sensors were registered.
2. Siemens Continental system – because the sensors will "sleep" when the vehicle is not
moving, driving the vehicle may be necessary to activate the sensors before registering
them.
3. Tire pressure gauge accuracy should be compared against a wheel sensor reading in the
TPMS current data stream and compensated for while using the gauge. If the tire gauge is
off by 2 PSI, adjust for the 2PSI when airing up the tires. Always check a tire’s cold pressure
and refer to the tire information decal on the driver’s side B-pillar for correct pressure.
4. When replacing a sensor equipped with an adjustable stem, be sure to use a NEW (break-
away) nut. On sensors with a fixed stem, the old nut can be reused.
5. After installing a new TPMS Control Unit, the technician is asked to verify that the correct
vehicle name is entered. The GDS should automatically enter the correct vehicle name.
In 2008 and 2009, Kia changed from High Line to Low Line systems on Amanti (GH) and
Sorento (BL) vehicles. For these vehicles, the technician should add a "1" after the "GH" or
"BL" for a High Line, or a "2" for Low Line.
The Rio (JB) will probably change to "JB2" if it is not already set as "JB2".

GDS TPMS Overview

When replacing wheel sensors, make sure to follow the procedure below, using the GDS.
Register Sensor and Set Sensor Status:
1. Use “Register Sensor” to read the sensor ID numbers and input them into the TPMS control
module.
2. Use “Set Sensor Status” to get sensor information such as: Battery Level, Pressure,
Temperature, Transmission and Acceleration. "Set Sensor Status" is also used when changing
the state of a new sensor to High or Low. This is done automatically.

* NOTICE
With the GDS-TPMS module, switching sensors between High Line and Low Line is
done automatically.

Using the GDS when Servicing Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

Below are some of the steps for using the GDS-
TPMS module when working on Kia’s TPMS
systems. For more complete information, please
see the TPMS User Guide from the main page of
the GDS unit.

B. Wheel Sensor ID Writing, Manual Input

This function is used to manually input the
ID of the TPMS sensors to the TPMS control
module. The TPMS Sensor ID can be registered
automatically by going to "Register Sensor"
function.
When the TPMS control module or the TPMS
sensor is replaced, the TPMS sensor ID could
be registered using this function for the TPMS
system to operate properly.

1. After reading the procedures on the screen,

press the "OK" button.

* NOTICE
The TPMS Sensor ID can be registered automatically (using the GDS TPMS module) by
going to "Register Sensor" function under "Data Treatment."

Input the TPMS sensor ID correctly for each

location, as shown in this screen image. The ID
of the TPMS sensor consists of 8 alphanumeric
digits (numbers and letters).

* NOTICE
• After inputting each newly applied
TPMS sensor ID, press "Enter" on the
keyboard to save the TPMS sensor ID.
• After inputting the final TPMS sensor
ID, press "OK" button on the bottom
of the screen to save the TPMS
sensor ID.

After completing the new TPMS Sensor ID

registration, this message box will appear.

C. VIN Writing
This function is used to register the VIN (Vehicle
Identification Number) into the TPMS control
module.
After replacing the TPMS Control Module the
VIN must be registered in the module.
1. After checking the procedure on the screen,
press "OK".

D. Vehicle Name Writing

This function is used to input the vehicle name
to the TPMS control module.
When the TPMS control module is replaced, the
Vehicle Name must be registered in the new
TPMS control module.

1. After checking the procedure on the screen,

press "OK".

2. The Vehicle Name can be verified on this

page. The vehicle name next to "Read" is the
name recorded in the TPMS Control
Module. The vehicle name listed in the lower
left of the text box, is the name that should
be entered. Whether or not the names
match, press OK. If the "Read" vehicle name
did not already register the correct name, it
will after pressing OK.

* NOTICE
In 2008 and 2009, Kia changed from High
Line to Low Line on Amanti (GH) and
Sorento (BL). In these cases, the tech
should add a "1" after the GH or BL for
High Line or a "2" for Low Line.
The Rio (JB) will probably change to
"JB2" if it is not already set as JB2.

3. After completing Vehicle Name registration,

this message box will appear. Press "Ok" to
continue.

as measured by GDS TPMS (left front, right front, right rear, left rear).
• Sensor options will be automatically configured according to the selected vehicle.
• If the sensor needs to be switched from High Line to Low Line or Low Line to High
Line, the GDS TPMS Module will automatically switch the sensor to the correct line
for the vehicle. This action is indicated by the green LED light flashing three (3)
times for confirmation, instead of just once.

F. TPMS Mode Configuration

This function enables the user to configure the
TPMS Control Module mode. In most case
a TPMS Control Module with the VIN and
Vehicle Name registered, would automatically
switch from Virgin to Normal mode. In some
cases (some TRW systems) this has to be done
manually.

1. After checking the procedure on the screen,

press "OK".
