Topic: Indus Valley Civilizations

Learning Objective: To learn regarding the two major

cities named Harappa & Mohenjo-Daro as part of
Indus Civilization.
INDUS CIVILIZATION
• The Indus Valley Civilization was
an ancient civilization located in
what is Pakistan and
northwest India today, on the
fertile bank of the Indus River .

• It is known as the first urban

civilization in Indian Sub-
continent.
CONTD…

•This civilization was developed in 2700 BC.

•This civilization is also known as Harappa
civilization.
•This civilization was no more found after
1700 BC.
FACTS ABOUT MOHENJO-DARO
• The civilization of the Indus River ----
Mohenjo - Daro and Harappa
arose at about 2500 BC and ended with
apparent destruction about 1700 BC.

• Mohenjo -Daro , meaning 'Mound of the

Dead Men'; is an archaeological site in
the province of Sindh , Pakistan. Built
around 2500 BCE. It extended to the
Iranian border, Gujrat as well.
CONTD
• it was one of the largest settlements of the ancient Indus Valley
Civilization, and one of the world's earliest major cities, contemporary
with the civilizations of ancient Egypt & Mesopotamia.

• Mohenjo -daro did have wealth however as there are

artifacts/relics made of ivory and gold.

• Every home had its own bathing area and drainage so it

appears that people were on relatively equal ground in their
conveniences.

• Mohenjo -daro may be destroyed by 2030 BCE because of

poor conservation, flooding, and salinity in the groundwater
CONTD…
• The city was divided into two districts:
• The Citadel and
• The lower town

• Mehenjo-Daro had no places for worship and governance, such as temples,

royal tombs, palaces etc.
• The above points indicates that the society had equal class structure.
• After 600 years the city was collasped, but the actual reasons are unknown.
It is assumed that the change in the culture or the change of path of the
river might be the reasons.
"GREAT BATH" MOHENJO-DARO

• The "great bath" is without doubt the earliest public water tank in the
ancient world. It is one of the largest public buildings at Mohenjo-
daro, measuring 108 ft. x 180 ft. with the bathing pool 39 ft. long, 28 ft.
wide and 8 ft. deep.

• Discovered in 1926 through archeological excavations, the great bath

is considered to be one of the most renown structures of all ruins of the
ancient Indus Valley Civilization at Mohenjo-daro.
