A ferry service operates between a pair of origin and destination (say, A and B) on the two opposite banks of a river
in an urban area. The service is provided by the concerned Urban Local Body (ULB) that contemplates for
improving the existing service based on the present demand and its trend of growth. At present the service is
operated by motor boat which is grossly inadequate in terms of its capacity. Consequently, the ULB plans to procure
new vessels and invest on the infrastructure of the ferry-station as well.

Your assignment is to prepare an augmentation proposal (considering a plan period of 10 years) that would
specifically recommend on the service schedule (considering peak-hour and off peak-hour demand), required
fleet size and the required number of embarking/disembarking bays in the ferry station. The recommended
service schedule should also give an idea of the level of utilization of the system (ratio of the actual volume of
passenger served and the theoretical capacity of a system over a typical week day).
The following are the necessary particulars/ data:
1. The number embarking / disembarking bays available at present in the ferry station -1
2. Seating capacity of new vessels to be procured: 60 (permissible overloading factor 1.25)
3. Minimum boarding / alighting time in a ferry station: 5 minutes (layover time)
4. Average river crossing time: 5 minutes
5. Expected growth in traffic volume: @ 5% per annum
