George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was born in Germany, and lived and composed
in his native country as well as Italy. His early interest in music was discouraged by
his father, who wanted him to study law. Handel practiced the clavichord in secret in
his attic as a youngster. He ultimately composed for voice, choir, orchestra, and
solo instruments.
