Grade 9

BEING A FILIPINO CITIZEN

It is imperative to develop an awareness of your identity, dignity, and knowledge of your culture
as a Filipino while establishing grounded values to be a stepping stone in your integration into society.
Start by asking the question, “What makes you a Filipino?”

A RESPECTFUL Filipino

- One of the most important Filipino values is respect.

“No person is worth respecting because of his or her own merit but because he or she is
God’s creation.”

- Relating with others based on respect is genuine and lasting. One becomes:
a. considerate of the other person’s ideas, preferences, and idiosyncrasies
b. understanding of the other person more deeply
c. cooperative and conflicts seldom arise

SELF - RESPECT: is essential for you to be able to respect others. Your self-respect is rooted in
the

love and acceptance of your total self - what you are and what you are not.

Having self-respect makes you stronger when failures and disappointments come since you
know who you are and you have accepted your very person.

TOLERANCE: Being tolerant is accepting and appreciating diversity.

- Is one key toward the solution of conflict and peace building. It promotes
peaceful coexistence among people of different cultures and beliefs.

Stems from having RESPECT for others.

DIVERSITY - differences in opinion or point of view, as well as differences in religion, nationality,
color, culture, and belief.

- Coexistence is one way for you to practice tolerance wherever you are in school or in
the larger community.
- Peaceful coexistence is living, working, and learning together, with everyone committing
to the practice of tolerance and mutual respect, and agreeing to resolve differences and
conflicts in a peaceful manner.
- Differences/non violent conflicts may be resolved through DIALOGUE where there is
listening and learning, and ideas are shared and accepted. A good dialogue allows
everyone to speak openly as everybody listens respectfully and attentively.
- You learn new perspectives, reflect on your own views, understand other views, and
learn to accept differences. Ultimately results to contribute in the advancement of the
community, school, or society.
