Assignment – Cutting Forces

Problem 1

Assume that, in orthogonal cutting, the rake angle is 25° and the coefficient of friction is 0.2.
Use the cutting ratio equation to determine the percentage increase in chip thickness when
the friction is doubled.

Problem 2

In a dry cutting operation using a –0.087 rad rake angle, the measured forces were Fc
=1330 N and Ft = 740 N. When a cutting fluid was used, these forces were Fc = 1200 N and
Ft = 710 N. What is the change in the friction angle resulting from the use of a cutting fluid?

Problem 3

The following data are available from orthogonal cutting experiments. In both cases, chip
thickness before the cut to=0.13 mm, width of cut w = 2.5 mm, rake angle = −5° , and
cutting speed Vc = 2 m/s.

Determine the shear angle , friction coefficient μ, shear stress , chip velocity Vch, and shear
velocity Vs.

Problem 4

A turning operation is performed on stainless steel with hardness 200 HB (with specific
energy of 2.8 J/mm3), cutting speed = 200 m/min, feed = 0.25 mm/rev, and depth of cut =
7.5 mm. How much power will the lathe draw in performing this operation if its mechanical
efficiency is 90%?
