features, Pump size Nomenclature and HPX Hydraulic Performance

HPX Pump Design Philosophy

The pump pedigree is derived from four donor product lines: Ingersoll Rand's A-line,
Worthington's HNN, Pacific's SVCN7 and Byron Jackson's SCE. The range consists of the
selection and rationalization of the performance available from these lines, combined with an
updated mechanical design to ensure full compliance with the API 610 8/9/10th edition and
API 682 2/3rd edition.

The re-designation to HPX ensures identical machines and the same high design
specifications are available from all participating FPD manufacturing locations.

Basic Construction Features

The type HPX pump is a single stage, horizontal, end suction process pump with overhung
impeller and radially split casing, fully compliant to API 610 8/9/10th edition.

The range is designed for continuous service in all process applications including oil
exploration and production, oil refining, petrochemical, chemical and general industrial
usage.

HPX – TECHNICAL WRITE UP

Casing
The casing is of single or dual volute design that reduces forces on the rotating element
thereby minimizing vibration and shaft deflection.
Dual volute is standard on many 3-inch discharge pumps and on all pumps above 3-inch
discharge. Single volute is standard on some 3-inch discharge pumps and on all smaller
sizes.
On all pumps up to 4", except 3 HPX17A, 4 HPX 17A and 4 HPX 18A, the discharge
configuration is centerline. On larger sizes, the discharge nozzle is tangential.
The fluid passages are designed to prevent turbulence and emphasize streamline flow.
The casing has mounting feet integrally cast on the centerline of the pump thus giving a
rigid construction and preventing distortion in high temperature applications.
The design incorporates a back pull out feature. This enables the complete rotating
assembly - including the cartridge mechanical seal - to be removed from the pump without
disturbing the main pipe work connections and the driver.

Casing Cover
The casing cover is either fabricated from plate or cast, depending on the material of
construction. Designed to the dimensional standards within the API 682 specification 'Table
1', the seal chamber can accommodate a wide variety of single or dual seal arrangements as
standard.

Stationary Wear Parts

Renewable wear parts are provided on the casing adjacent to the impeller wear parts to
prevent wear on the cast components. Casing front and back wear rings are fitted on all
models. Throat bushing is stationary on larger sizes, while on centerline discharge pumps a
patented rotating bushing assure a higher seal chamber pressure level. Back wear rings are
standard on all sizes, to minimize axial loads and provide an optimum seal chamber
environment.

Rotating Wear Parts

Renewable wear parts are provided on the impeller, running against stationary wear parts to
prevent wear to the casing and impeller. These are assembled to the impeller with and
interference fit to maintain accuracy, and are set screwed axially through both ring and
impeller hub to positively secure against movement.

HPX – TECHNICAL WRITE UP

Impeller
The impeller is a fully shrouded, radial flow, single entry design. All sizes are precision cast
to assure the highest attainable efficiency. All impellers are dynamically balanced with
rotating wear rings fitted as standard to API 610 requirements.

Inducer
Inducers are available on several sizes as an option for low NPSHA applications.

Shaft
The shaft is of ample strength and rigidity. It is precision machined over its entire length
and has generous fillet radii at each change of section to reduce stress concentrations. Shaft
deflections at the seal chamber are minimal and fall within the guidelines stated in API 610
8th edition. An optional extra heavy-duty shaft design, with very low l3/d4 values, is
available on most centerline discharge pump sizes.

Bearings
The anti-friction bearing arrangement consists of a single row deep groove ball bearing to
carry the pump radial loads and duplex angular contact single row ball bearings mounted
back to back to carry partial radial and all thrust loads. Bearings are in full compliance with
API 610 requirements.

Bearing Housing
The bearing housing is fitted with an end cover on the outboard end for ease of inspection
and maintenance. Each end of the housing is fitted with a labyrinth type shaft seal (made
from non-sparking materials) too effectively retain the oil and prevent entry of any foreign
matter. Flowserve bearing isolators are available as an option.
A shaft mounted metal slinger that transfers oil to bearing feed galleries within the housing
wall provides the standard bearing lubrication.
Ring oil lubrication is optional. Two metal slingers are positively locked on the shaft with
setscrews and a heavy-duty oil ring provides bearing lubrication. A plugged port on the top
of the bearing housing is positioned to allow visual inspection of the oil ring.
Oil mist lubrication is optional; "Purge" oil mist provisions are available on either slinger or
ring oil designs. "Pure" oil mist (no slinger, no oil ring) is also available. Constant level oiler
is supplied as standard. For purge oil mist, a balanced type oiler is used. No oiler is supplied
for pure oil mist.

When application requires, the standard cooling system is a fan, either with slinger or oil
ring lubrication. Optional water-cooling is available, should this be a customer preference.

Base plates
Base plates are of welded steel construction either drain rim or drain pan to suit customer
preference. Standard designs are intended for grouting with ungrouted versions also
available. The base plates are provided with rounded corners, continuous welds, and leveling
screws as standard per API 610. Base plates will be to API 610 dimensional standard unless
customer's specifications (or large drivers sizes) require non-API dimensions. This provides
optimum plot sizes for the unit and lower customer installation costs.Lateral and transverse
driver alignment screws are available as standard when prescribed by API criteria, or as an
option when not required.

Instrumentation
A full range of instrumentation for monitoring pump condition can be supplied. The
parameters able to be monitored include: suction and discharge temperature, casing
temperature, bearing vibration, bearing / oil temperature, seal chamber pressure.

Testing
All pumps are subjected to a hydrostatic and non-witnessed performance tests in
accordance with API 610 requirements. Witnessed and optional tests can also be provided.

Auxiliary Piping
All applicable API 610 seal and cooling piping plans are available in materials and options to
suit application requirements.
