Early Evening Bird Walk Report

Results: 31 Species, 22 Birders
Description: The early evening bird walks hosted by Western Cuyahoga Audubon have been
quite popular and the evening walk on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 to Cleveland Lakefront
Nature Preserve (CLNP), was no exception. Thanks to Michelle Brosius, field trip coordinator for
suggesting that these evening walks be pushed up to 6 PM due to sunset coming earlier. The
group had just enough time to make a loop through CLNP!
A little over 20 people attended the walk with Nancy Howell, Michelle Brosius, Al Rand, and Bill
Deininger leading the way. Birds eating berries were the “target species” at this site. Were some
birds eating berries? Probably, but I don’t think anyone focused on that. The weather was great
and birding was fairly busy with Northern Flicker, Mourning Dove, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch,
Chimney Swift, and several warblers moving around before getting through the CLNP turnstile.
Why is there a dog barking and barking and barking in the Nature Preserve? Turns out it was not
a dog at all but a coyote with an injured hind foot. The animal was apparently not thrilled with
so many people, but made no attempt to come close. Neat to see the animal, too bad about its
injury. As the group entered CLNP and stopped to view the open area just over the small
footbridge, other birders were there and pointed out additional warblers. Other species
included Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Gray Catbird, Swainson’s Thrush, Veery, Brown

Thrasher, American Robin, Great Crested Flycatcher, and Red-eyed Vireo. A Rose-breasted
Grosbeak was heard, but not sighted. So many places to look, so many birds bopping around.
Not everyone got to see everything, but a couple of warblers gave us good looks.
The group took the perimeter trail along the east side of CLNP toward the lake, then turned
onto the Monarch Trail, then through the grassland/prairie, and back via the west side of the
perimeter trail. The birding slowed considerably as we moved east with a Ruby-throated
Hummingbird sighted, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Cedar Waxwings. The waxwings were not
feeding on berries, but catching insects “flycatcher style” by flying out, snatching an insect then
flying back to a perch. Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal also were seen.
Over the lake Double-crested Cormorants skimmed the water’s surface and Ring-billed Gulls
either bobbed on the water or flew by. Birding really slowed down as the sun set lower, but the
lake was beautiful as was the sky with wispy clouds that were pink and orange in the setting
sun’s glow. Participants seemed to be enjoying their walk no matter if there were birds or not.
Reaching the trail on the west side, near the marina cove, Mallard, Canada Goose and
additional gulls and cormorant were noted. The cormorants appeared to be heading into some
of the trees for the evening.
By the time we reached the gate to exit, the sun had set, but there was still enough light to get
to the parking area. A lovely evening with a wonderful group. - Nancy Howell
