General Information
The education system in the United States is different from that of many other
countries, although in the United States. The federal government contributes
almost 10% to the national budget for education, although education is primarily
the responsibility of state and local government; In Minnesota, nearly 80% of
public education funding comes from the state, about 17% comes from local
sources, and less than 5% comes from the federal government. Each state has
its own department of education and laws that regulate finances, it is also in
charge of hiring school staff, student attendance and curriculum. States also
determine the number of years of compulsory education, in most states,
education is compulsory from 5 or 6 years to 16; but in some state’s teens must
stay in school until 18 years. Therefore, each state has great control over what is
taught in its schools and over the requirements that a student must meet, in
addition to being responsible for the funding of schooling. In most states the
public education system is divided into: Local school districts: These are
administered by a school board, which represents the local community. School
districts it can be small, covering just a small town or rural community, or it can
be huge and cover an entire city; according to their policy, they are responsible
for coordinating educational policies, planning for educational needs in the
community and often even establishing programs and curriculum.

The division of the education system into 3 levels: Elementary or primary

education, secondary education, and postsecondary or higher education (college
or university). Formal schooling lasts 12 years, until around age 18. Compulsory
schooling, though, ends by age 16. All children in the United States have access
to free public schools.
