Introduction:
Education is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) posited by
UNESCO. Accordingly, education is considered the basic human need, and
essential for a decent living and moral and ethical life. Without education the
human society would be uncivilized and human grouping is without direction and
purpose. The economic, political, religious, and physical developments will not be
possible.

It is in this context that the influencing effect of the social environment to the
physical and mental well-being and ability of the individual to effectively function
as a responsible global citizen will be explored and the relationship between
philosophy and education will be better understood.

As future educational leaders, it is important for doctoral students to

understand and appreciate the vital role they play in influencing the learners’
psychosocial development and how the interplay of philosophy and education can
make this happened.

Definition/Meaning of Education

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 9

Education has been defined by various scholars according to their cultural and social set ups.
The few definitions are as follows:
1.Plato says, education is to develop physically and mentally a human being, in such a way
that his / her potentialities could be realized.

2.Aristotle says, education is the process though which a sound mind is developed in a sound
body.

3.According to Dewey education is the process to develop all the capabilities of a person as
he/she could control his/her environment and fulfill his / her duties.

4.Al Ghazali says, education is the process to enable an individual to know between true and
false, good and bad, and right and wrong conducts.

5.Al Maududi says, education is the process to bring the potential good in a man.

The main purpose of education is to have sound mind in a
sound body, and virtuous person.

Philosophy gives answers and discuss that what is sound mind,

sound body, and what virtuous person is.

Philosophy is the contemplative aspect of education and education

is the dynamic aspect philosophy.

“Education without philosophy is blind,
and philosophy without education is
invalid/lame.”

Some questions for reflection and sharing:
➢ Why am I in education?
➢ Does becoming an educator have meaning to me?
➢ What is the purpose of education to me?
➢ What is it about?
➢ How should I sustain my passion for education?
Wait I will
call a
friend?
What is the
meaning of
education?

On a piece of paper, answer the following guide
questions/instruction:

Give three things you may want to do in the next 30

days as educator which you believe is shaped by your personal philosophy of
education?

What three important things you want to do over the next 10 years which
demonstrate your personal philosophy as educator?

Do you think the ideas and purpose you put in your personal philosophy will not
be affected with what we experience now by our present psycho-social
environment we have? If your answer is yes, what will you do?

Meaning/Definition
of Philosophy

30/08/2021
There is no exact definition of philosophy, but in general sense
philosophy is considered as:

• The love for wisdom.

• The relational approach to any phenomenon.

• It seeks justification of something through rational interpretation.

• It is the life of reason, a reasoned pursuit of fundamental truths.

• It is concerned with problems whose solution depend not on facts

but ways.

Factors Affecting Philosophies of Education

Philosophies of education are conditioned by:

❑ existing knowledge,
❑ social ideals of society,
❑ interest of influential groups in that society,
❑ personal experience and
❑ vision of educational leaders and
❑ individual temperament of the ones possessing the particular
philosophy.

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 18

What is knowledge and how it affect philosophies of education?

Knowledge is familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or

something, such as:

❑ facts (descriptive knowledge),

❑ skills (procedural knowledge), or
❑ objects (acquaintance knowledge).

When we have prior knowledge about a certain issue or topic, we understand it

better. It plays an important role in students' life especially in the school. If they don't
have related knowledge, they face difficulties in understanding the text
/lesson/topic/issue.

What is social ideals and how can this affect our philosophies of
education?

Ideals is one that is regarded as a model for imitation; an ultimate object or

aim of endeavor :

Social ideals- they are the outcomes, or things which we - as a society - all
strive together even if sometimes we don’t achieve it.

A societal ideal can be making sure no-one in our society goes hungry;
ensuring that all children receive the same standard of education; putting an
end to violence; ensuring equality of race, gender, community.

How can interest of influential groups int the society affect philosophies of
education?

Influential groups in the society can influence the philosophies of education in the
many way by:

• Providing schools with financial resources to purchase required materials and

other needs of the school

▪ Demanding the inclusion of certain subjects in the curriculum

▪ Influencing learners to reject courses they consider detrimental to the interest of

the group

▪ Faculty assignment and advancement

▪ Provision

The leader’s vision of education can also affect his educational philosophy.

A vision is a mental picture of the result one wants to achieve---a picture so clear
and strong it will help make that result real. A vision is a picture of the real results
of real efforts. It comes from the future and informs and energizes the present.

One’s vision can serve as a practical guide in coming up with plans, setting goals
and objectives, making decisions, and coordinating and evaluating the work on
any project.

A vision helps keep organizations and groups focused and work together even
under complex and stressful times.

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 24

Visioning is the most powerful tool I’ve witnessed in helping schools and the
members of the academic community get the results they want.

Here’s why a vision is so powerful:

▪ A vision inspires action. It creates the energy and will to make change happen.
It inspires individuals and school to commit, to persist and to give their best.

▪ A vision is a practical guide for creating plans, setting goals and objectives,
making decisions, and coordinating and evaluating the work on any project,
large or small.

▪ A vision helps keep the school and groups focused and work together.

Relationship Between Philosophy and Education

Philosophy and education are two different fields of studies but

they are closely linked together, because without any rational
thinking prior to education, the whole educational process is
directionless.

Education is the means to achieve the goal while philosophy deals

with the ends and education is the means to achieve those ends.

Philosophy gives ideals, values and principles while education

works out those ideals, values and principle

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 30

The relationship between philosophy and education can also be
explained as follow:

1. Aims & Objectives

Education in every society is directed for specific aims and objectives. That
aims and objectives are set by a philosophical approach. For example the
aims of Pakistani education are to develop socially and morally sound
person on the principles of Islam. So our whole educational set up aim is
the creation of that kind of person and that aim is set by Islamic Philosophy.

If Plato wants an ideal state so he uses education as an instrument and set

aims and objectives to be achieved by his ideal educational plan.

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 31

Relationship of Education to Philosophy

❑ Philosophy is wisdom.

❑ Education transmits that wisdom from one generation to the

other.

❑ Philosophy is the theory of education. In other words, education

is the dynamic side of philosophy, or application of the
fundamental principles of philosophy.

❑ Philosophy formulates the method, education its process

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 32

The relationship between philosophy and education can also be
explained as follow:

2. Methods & Curriculum

Every educational system is based upon specific teaching

methodologies and the curriculum. What should be the teaching
methodology? And what kind of teacher should be?
And what kind of curriculum be taught to the students? All the
answers are given by philosophy.

Education is dependent on philosophy for guidance in various of

areas.

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 33

The relationship between philosophy and education can also be explained as
follow:

3. Philosophy of Education
There is a separate branch of philosophy which is called philosophy of
education. The branch investigates that what should be the nature of
education? Whether the educational aims be based on specific
religion, social, moral, scientific basis. And how these aims can be
achieved.

4.Education is the Dynamic Side of Philosophy

Here the great scholars like Ghazali, Iqbal, Plato, and Aristotle wanted
that their philosophies should be given practical shape. The shape
can be given only through well planned education
system.
30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 34
The relationship between philosophy and education can also be explained as
follow:

5. Sound mind in Sound Body or Virtuous Man

The main purpose of education is to have sound mind in a sound

body, and virtuous person.

Philosophy gives answers and discuss that what is sound mind,

sound body, and what virtuous person is. How we can say the
philosophy is the contemplative aspect of education and education is
the dynamic aspect philosophy.

30/08/2021 PUP OU DEN 730 35

The relationship between philosophy and education can also be explained as
follow:

6. Change in Education, Culture and Society

In order to bring the desire change in society or in the existing

education set up, a very pre-planned philosophy should be behind
that kind of reformation. Like the western nations want
reforms in our education system especially in maddarasa through
induction of computer and other subjects.

Relationship between education and philosophy is very close. They

are called the two sides of the same coin. That’s why educationists
and teachers must have basic information about various educational
philosophies in order to know the whole nature of a specific
educational

The causes of academic underperformance are one major concern of the educational community
and policy makers all over the world.

According to some studies and literature, the heart of educational leaders effort lies the notion of
the classroom as a tension system in which various factors, like structural factors such as classroom
size and psychological factors such as student perceptions, interact to produce a stable
environment that elicits a consistent set of attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes over time.

Differences among groups arise from consistent differences both in their expectations and what they
actually experience.

The above points to the need for educators who can balance students’ expectations and needs with
what the enabling environment condition the school can give to their students according to their
mandate.
These provision of enabling environment for learners can be seen in the school’s vision, mission.

How does the child psycho- social development affect the child’s learning
domain?

Psychosocial environment in early childhood influences not only the health but as
well as the well-being of the growing individual, and may also impact the later
development of emotional and behavioral difficulties as well as their behavioral
domain.

The causes of a child’s difficulty to cope with his/her learning enrivorment could be
due to many inter-related psycho-social experiences of the child The individual and
contextual factors, such as the family’s socioeconomic status (SES), parenting stress,
and other environmental exposures, may influence children’s emotional and
behavioral difficulties

Family climate has a significant impact in predicting behavior difficulties in children.

There is some evidence that the impact of stressful parenting behavior on a child’s
mental health might be associated with the child’s biological pathways through stress
hormone secretion and genetic sensitivity

Some Educational Philosophies of Filipino Educators
Rizal - the school is the book in which is written the future of the nation.
Show on the school of a people and we will tell you what people are.

To Rizal, the mission of education is to elevate the country to the

highest seat of glory and to develop the people's mentality. Since
education is the foundation of society and a prerequisite for social progress,
Rizal claimed that only through education could the country be saved
from domination.

Rizal also believed that without education and liberty, which are the soil and
sun of man, no reform is possible, no measure can give the result desired.

Rizal’s philosophy of education, gives importance on the provision of

“proper motivation” in order to holster the great social forces that make
education a success, to create in the youth an innate desire to cultivate his
intelligence and give him life eternal.

Schools according to Rizal must train its citizens the three phases of Life:

1. Moral
2. Intellectual
3. Physical

Further, Rizal advised schools to prepare the individual to live efficiently

both as individual and as a member of the community to which it belongs

Manuel. L. Quezon – “there can be no progress

except under the auspices of peace . Without
peach and public order, it will be impossible to
promote education, improve the condition of the

Some Educational Philosophies of Filipino Educators
Mabini – “Thou shall cultivate the special gifts which had been
granted thee, working and studying something to my ability,
never leaving the part of righteousness and justice in order to
attain thine own perfection.”

According to Mabini, “all men have been given life by

God...to preserve and employ in terms of a preordained
mission, which is to proclaim God's glory in doing what is
good and just.” Men are by nature good and just and have the
capacity to unfold his goodness and sense of justice to others.

spirit of tolerance, respect for law, lover for peace and practice
of both.”

Jorge Bocobo – “To my humble way of thinking, education

(college) has for its supreme and overshadowing aim the
formulation of a sound and noble outlook of life.

According to him Filipino culture and tradition should be the basis

of a truly Filipino education. He equated education with patriotism
and nationalism and believed that education is the means of
preparing the individual for a democratic way of life.

Some Educational Philosophies of Filipino Educators
Rafael Palma – Education must produce
individuals who are both useful in themselves and
to society.

Rafael Palma advocated “academic freedom”.

“The teacher according to him is not supposed to
dramatize. He has no right to impose on his
students his theories or personal belief. He is
expected to stimulate free discussion, leaving to
his students the choice of the system of thought
which best satisfies their reason.”
