Converting RADIAN to DEGREES

Review
If two angles in standard position
have the same terminal side, they
are called coterminal angles.

Finding the Coterminal Angle

Degrees - add and subtract by
multiple of 360 degrees.
Radian - add and subtract by
multiple of 2π.

the reference angle.
EXAMPLE 1:
Find the reference angle of -110°
Step 1: -110° + 360° = 250°

Step 2: 250° lies in quadrant III so

the formula is Aᵣ = 𝚹 - 180°
Step 3: Aᵣ = 𝚹 - 180°
Aᵣ = 250° - 180
Aᵣ = 70°
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the reference angle of -2𝜋/3
Step 1: -2𝜋/3 + 2𝜋 = 4𝜋/3 or 240°

Step 2: 4𝜋/3 or 240° lies in quadrant

III so the formula is Aᵣ = 𝚹 - 𝜋
Step 3: Aᵣ = 𝚹 - 𝜋 Aᵣ = 𝚹 - 180°
Aᵣ = 4𝜋/3 - 𝜋 Aᵣ = 240° - 180
Aᵣ = 𝜋/3 Aᵣ = 60°
EXAMPLE 3:
Find the reference angle of 750°
Step 1: 750° - 360(2) = 30°

Step 2: 30° lies in quadrant I so the

formula is Aᵣ = 𝚹
Step 3: Aᵣ = 𝚹
Aᵣ = 30°
EXAMPLE 4:
Find the reference angle of -578°
Step 1: -578° + 360(2) = 142°

Step 2: 142° lies in quadrant II so

the formula is Aᵣ = 180° - 𝚹
Step 3: Aᵣ = 180° - 𝚹
Aᵣ = 180° - 142°
Aᵣ = 38°
EXAMPLE 5:
Find the reference angle of 1390°
Step 1: 1390° - 360(3) = 310°

Step 2: 310° lies in quadrant IV so

the formula is Aᵣ = 360° - 𝚹
Step 3: Aᵣ = 360° - 𝚹
Aᵣ = 360° - 310°
Aᵣ = 50°
Try This!
Identify the quadrant and reference angle of each given angle.

a. 150°
b. -70°
c. 880°
d. -410°
e. -88°
