Introduction to IELTS Writing task 1


IELTS writing task consist of 2 task. This week lesson will cover
writing task part 1. In part 1, you are given a diagram, a chart, a map or
pictures to interpret and write a 150 words essay about it. This
particular lesson will show you the strategy to describe a process in
writing. Take a look at the example below.
The diagram below shows the process of
photosynthesis.

Summarise the information by selecting and


reporting the main features and make comparison
where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.


Strategy for writing
Before you write anything, you should analyze the diagram first
and make a plan. The general plan should include 3 parts, introduction,
overview, features. First paragraph usually contain introductions and
overview while body paragraph will contain the features of the diagram.
In this particular task, you should not write conclusion. In 20 minutes,
you might not have time to write a conclusion.

Introduction & overview


In introduction, you should state what the process is about. The
shortcut to this lies in the instruction. Take a look below

photosynthesis.

This statement appear alongside the writing instructions. You should


use this as part of your writing by paraphrasing it. Paraphrase means
you rewrite a sentence into different sentence but still retains the same
meaning. When you receive the diagram, try to focus on this questions.
1. What is the beginning?
2. What is the end?
3. How many stages?
4. Is it a cycle or start-end process?
5. Is it natural or man-made process?

Let’s go back to the example again. We start by paraphrasing the


statement from the instruction and include information from the
questions

Photosynthesis is a natural linear process beginning


with sunshine and carbon dioxide being absorbed and finishing with the
production of sugar, oxygen and starch. There are five main stages in
this process, allowing plants to convert light energy to chemical energy in
the form of sugar.

The diagram shows how photosynthesis happen naturally.


It is a five-stage process to turn light, carbon dioxide and water
into sugar, starches and oxygen.

Introduction and overview are very important in this particular


writing task. It is key to get a high score in IELTS writing task.
