BRIEF INTRODUCTION
MUSIC: MUSIC ACCOMPANIMENT IMPROVISATION (VOCAL) CLASSICAL PERIOD

Throughout the eras of the Western art music tradition including the Classical
period, improvisation was a valued skill. Some Classical period composers like
Mozart and Beethoven and many other famous composers and musicians were
known for their improvisational skills. As a result, some classical music forms
contained sections for improvisation.
Musical improvisation is the creative activity of immediate musical composition
which combines performance with communication of emotions and instrumental
technique as well as a spontaneous response to other musicians. A vocal
improvisation can be a harmony, a melody, a solo, a rhythm, etc. (In your case you
are the improviser the other musician is the composer of your selected musical
piece. Some classical music forms contained sections for improvisation, such as the
cadenza in solo concerto (cadenza often refers to a portion of a concerto in which the
orchestra stops playing, leaving the soloist to play alone in free time, or the
prelude to some keyboard suites by Bach and Handel, which consist of elaborations
of a progression of chords, which performers are to use as the basis for their
improvisation. Bach and Handel are all belonged to a tradition of solo keyboard
improvisation, in which they improvised on the harpsichord or pipe organ.
To be able to improvise, it is important to consider the subject, we need a good

2
vocabulary (knowing how to choose appropriate words) and we also need to know
the context in which these words are inserted, so that they make sense. We may also
consider knowing how to choose the appropriate rhythm or beat. There are five ways
to start classical improvisation, first pick a piece to base your improvisation, second
practice the melody, third change up the rhythm, next challenges yourself with the
harmony and last perfect your pitch.
Listen carefully to these selected examples of improvised musical pieces.

ARTS: Baroque Art Production (Technique and Style)

The Baroque style is characterized by exaggerated motion and clear detail used to
produce drama, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature,
dance, and music. Baroque iconography was direct, obvious, and dramatic, intending to
appeal above all to the senses and the emotions.

The use of the chiaroscuro technique is a well-known trait of Baroque art. This
technique refers to the interplay between light and dark and is often used in paintings of
dimly lit scenes to produce a very high-contrast, dramatic atmosphere. The chiaroscuro
technique is visible in the painting “The Massacre of the Innocents” by Peter Paul Rubens.

Other style is the Sfumato in painting, this technique which involves blending the
edge between colors so that there is a soft transition. The term "sfumato" is Italian which
translates to soft, vague, or blurred. The technique was popularized by the old masters of
the Renaissance art movement, like Leonardo da Vinci, who used it to create atmospheric
and almost dreamy depictions. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous
examples of the sfumato technique in action, particularly around the subject's face. n the
close-up below, notice the soft transitions between light and dark tones and the lack of
hard edges. The result is a very smooth appearance. The opposite of this would be
the broken color used by the Impressionists, which featured thick texture and rough
edges.

3
Fresco is a mural painting technique that involves painting with water-based paint
directly onto wet plaster so that the paint becomes an integral part of the plaster. The
Italian Renaissance was the great period of fresco painting, as seen in the works
of Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio who favored the sotto in su (“from below to above”)
technique—and many other painters from the late 13th to the mid-16th
century. Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Stanza murals in
the Vatican are the most famous of all frescoes.

P.E. SOCIAL DANCES (MIXED DANCE)

Every individual has a rhythm. It is found in all of nature and is natural to every
individual. Rhythm is most clearly seen through dance- the art of movement. A
mixed dance, dance mixer, or simply mixer is a kind of participation dance in a
social dance setting that involves changing partners as an integral part. ... Mixers allow
dancers to meet new partners and allow beginners to dance with more advanced
dancers. It intended primarily to get to know other people in attendance to a certain
social function. They are also called ballroom as a variety of social dances performed by
couples in which there is a conventional pattern of steps.

One example of the ballroom is Cha-cha-cha a true Latin dance which originated in
Cuba where it evolved from the Danzón-mambo, an older form of Cuban dance. Cha-cha-
cha became a popular social ballroom dance in the United States in the early 1950s.

Cha -cha-cha is a great workout, it has more benefits such as Reduce stress, increase
energy and improve strength, increase muscle tone and coordination, lower your risk of
heart disease, decrease blood pressure and cholesterol, manage your weight, strengthen
4
the bones, increase your stamina and flexibility.

Dance may look effortless, but it requires a lot of strength, flexibility, and stamina. It
also comes with a high risk of injuries. Whether you are a dancer, the parent of a dancer
or a dance teacher, you should be aware of the most common dance injuries and learn
how to avoid them. A few studies that looked into dance injuries found that injuries from
using your joints and muscles too much (overuse injuries) are the most common in
dancers. The majority of these overuse injuries involve an ankle, leg, foot, or lower back.
Some common dance injuries are Hip injuries, foot and ankle injuries, knee injuries,
stress fracture and sometimes dancer are also likely to develop arthritis.

We should know some of the first aid treatment like sprain needs to loosen and
immobilized the ankle; apply the Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation in cramps need to
stretch the muscle and gently rub it to help it relax; use a warm towel or heating pad on
tense or tight muscle and heat exhaustion have a victim lie down with his/ her feet
elevated in a cool place.

HEALTH: MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE

People give several reasons for taking drugs. Some believe that these drugs can make
them feel and look good. Certain drugs of abuse produce pleasure or euphoria.
Euphoria is a high sensation of feeling good and extremely relaxed. Continuous and
prolonged drug use has a very bad effect on a person. It can alter his behavior, and his
mental, physical, and psychological condition. Most importantly drug dependence
results in drug abuse, drug tolerance, problems with society and law, withdrawal
symptoms, severe health problems, poor quality of life, and eventually death.

There are Myths and Misconceptions about drugs of abuse. These are: Drugs of
abuse improves memory, Drug of abuse help in the digestion of food, make a person
bold and brave, remove life’s problems and worries, and drug of abuse heat up the
person’s body. Aside from these, there are some signs and symptoms of drug
use/abuse. These include declining interest in studies and work, the negative outlook in
life, uncontrolled irritation, paranoia, severe feeling of depression and loneliness,
complains of over fatigue, frequently involve in petty fights and crimes, lousy physical
appearance, reddish eyes, sudden loss in weight, convulsions, brown stains in
fingertips, foul body smell, loss of balance, loss of concentration. We must understand
5
that it is not easy to know and feel the effects of drugs in the body. The effects are not
always the same as the drug users.
