ISSUE 2 Friday 17th September
Extra Curricular Activities have started and it is great to see
so much activity, and to hear so much laughter on the school
campus. Lessons and learning are now in full swing and we
are approaching some normalcy, or at least as much as is
possible in these challenging times.
Thank you very much for your continued cooperation and
support for our Covid-19 policy. As Covid-19 cases rise across
Poland, we will remain vigilant as we enter the autumn and
winter months.
Covid-19 and School Catering Services
We are currently unable to offer a catering service to our
families due to the Covid-19 restrictions. We are unable to
mix groups of students from different Year groups in an
indoor space – lessons, assemblies, class and form tutor
times are held in Year group bubbles. We are unable to serve
hot food in classrooms, because of Food & Hygiene
regulations, as well as the Health & Safety issues associated
with hot food, the preparation and serving of the food and
the disposal of waste.
This will, I know, come as a disappointment for some
families. For the inconvenience that this is causing, I do
apologise.
Educational Visits
We are carefully planning educational visits for students
across the schools. Once again, Covid-19 has resulted in
changes to the way which we would normally operate. My
instruction to teachers is that educational visits can take
place if, as a result of a Health & Safety Risk Assessment, I
judge that the visit can be conducted safely and will result in
an enhanced learning experience.
That means, in reality, that we will not use public transport
to travel to venues. It also means that we will not ask for
parents to transport students to and from venues. Instead,
each visit will start and finish at the school site, with
especially selected transport arrangements, with students
travelling in the same Year group bubbles.
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel a planned trip to
Krakow and the mountains for our secondary school
students. After conducting a Risk Assessment, it became
clear that we could manage all risks (through the use of
bubbles – groups of students with a designated teacher not

mixing indoors) except the travel to and from the venue
(3 hours by coach). Therefore, with the health and
safety of our students in mind, we had to abandon this
planned trip.
Staffing Update
Our ICT teacher and Librarian has not been able to join
us because of Covid-19 regulations. He has had difficulty
in getting a Covid-19 visa to come into the EU. Currently,
primary class teachers are covering IT and Library
lessons in the primary school, with subject teachers
covering IT lessons in the secondary school. This is a
developing situation and I will communicate more news
as and when I have it.
Our Primary Korean Teacher, Mrs Lee, is currently in
Korea and is unable to join us for this academic year. We
have made a temporary arrangement for a replacement
and we are waiting to complete Safeguarding
Recruitment checks (professional references, police
check, etc) before we can appoint. Hopefully, that
process can conclude quickly and we will be able to
offer our Korean students in the primary school a full
timetable.
ICT Suite
Our ICT suite is temporarily out of action as we are
carrying out important security and infrastructure
upgrades, designed to add additional layers of
cybersecurity and to enhance student safety.
International School Assessments (ISA)
This year, Years 4,5,6,7,8+9 will be taking part in the
global International Schools Assessments.
These are assessments in:
- Literacy
- Mathematical Literacy
- Scientific Literacy
The International School Assessments are taken in
English by international schools across the world. They
are designed to provide schools with an international
benchmark for student progress. They are, very
specifically, designed to plot where a student is in their
individual development journey. ISA provides baseline
information for teachers about what a student can do

and what the next steps are in their learning journey.
This year’s ISA will take place from the 04.10.21 to
12.10.21. The ISA are an online assessment and will be
taken in the ICT suite (hence the security upgrades).
Designed by the Australian Council for Educational
Research (ACER), the ISA is based on the assessment
frameworks of the OECD’s Programme for
International Student Assessment (PISA) and has been
developed in consultation with international schools.
ACER has been instrumental in the implementation,
management and reporting of large-scale international
surveys and brings their experience in these types of
assessments to the ISA program. Like PISA, the ISA
assesses complex higher-order thinking skills because it
includes open-ended questions in Mathematical
Literacy, Reading and Scientific Literacy, which require
students to construct responses, for example, to
explain their reasoning, to find evidence or to justify
their opinion.
A full timetable will be published in the very near
future. And please, do not worry, the ISA experience is
designed to be engaging and interactive, in order to
give each student the best possible opportunity to
demonstrate what they know, and what they can do
with that knowledge.

 News from Head of Primary
What another fantastic week. As
well as enjoying the hot weather
this week by playing beautifully
during breaks and lunch, the
children's main focus and
attention was firmly on their
learning. From cooking in the
kitchen, planning and writing
their own stories in English,
continuing their place vlaue journey in Maths to
learning about the Stone Age and Hadrians Wall in
History. Our learning at BISC is not only varied but
incredibly exciting.
As the weather is now changing, I would like to
send a gentle reminder about appropriate clothing.
Jumper and cardigans are now needed as well as
waterproof jackets for when we go outside in wet
weather during lunch.
I would like to say a huge thank you for your
support regarding our ECA program. The uptake has
been fantastic and is a clear indication of the
children's interest in what our wonderful staff have
to offer.

News from Head of Secondary
We have spent a good deal of time over
the last week analysing our response to
the Covid-19 pandemic and, in
particular, what we have to do to create
safe learning environments for our
students off-campus.
Educational visits are an essential part of
a student’s experience, bringing the
curriculum to life with inspirational,
engaging experiences. We are planning a
series of Year group visits to various
educational sites. Your form tutor or specialist subject teacher
leading the experience will be in touch in the near future.
We are currently upgrading our Information Technology (IT)
hardware and software, to meet the standards required for
students to sit the International School Examinations. IT lessons for
Years 7, 8 & 9 are being led by subject teachers, as we await the
arrival of the IT Teacher, Mr Francis.
A last word from me. Waterproof and warm coats are going to be
needed as we head further into Autumn. Please don’t forget to
mark and label your child’s coats, please. And yes, I know. They
should be capable of looking after their own belongings. But,
speaking as the father of a 21 year old, I have bitter experience of
thinking that “he can’t possibly lose that at school”. Invariably he
did! And still does (at university)!

Drodzy Uczniowie,
nadszedł wrzesień, a wraz z nim różne konkursy dla
uczniów szkół podstawowych. Warto spróbować
swych sił, bowiem można wygrać wartościowe
nagrody i zyskać wyższą ocenę z zachowania.
Dzisiaj chcę Was zachęcić do uczestnictwa w XVII
Olimpiadzie Matematycznej Juniorów (OMJ). Jest to
jedyna olimpiada przedmiotowa z matematyki na
poziome szkoły podstawowej, która została wpisana
przez MEN na listę olimpiad uprawniających do
przyjmowania w pierwszej kolejności laureatów i
finalistów do szkół ponadpodstawowych.
Więcej informacji możecie uzyskać u mnie oraz u Pani Ani Szumilak-Jasztal. Na
drzwiach mojej klasy zauważycie także plakat zawierający najważniejsze informacje o
Olimpiadzie – w tym tegoroczny terminarz – oraz zadania części korespondencyjnej
zawodów I stopnia, trwającej od 1 września do 11 października br.
Udział w niej jest szansą dla uzdolnionych uczniów na rozwinięcie swojego talentu oraz
na poznanie rówieśników o podobnych zainteresowaniach. Także i te dzieci, które
niezbyt dobrze radzą sobie z tym przedmiotem, nieoczekiwanie potrafią zaciekawić się
nieszablonowymi problemami oraz osiągnąć bardzo dobry wynik na teście.
Gorąco zachęcam Was zatem do uczestnictwa w tej Olimpiadzie i życzę połamania piór
i długopisów
