Type Description of position (Number) / Position

Audition Assistant conductor - Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra (1) – Temporary

Notes The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra has a vacancy for:

Assistant conductor
The auditions wlll be held on March 23, 2021.
The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most versatile orchestras in the Netherlands. It
plays the great symphonies of composers such as Mahler and Brahms as well as operas by R. Strauss
and Wagner. The orchestra excels in the style of the late romantic and early twentieth century and is
renowned for its high level. The Royal Concertgebouw is the home venue for varied concert
programming. For over 30 years, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the affiliated
Netherlands Chamber Orchestra have been the primary orchestra partner of Dutch National Opera
and are considered one of the best opera orchestras in Europe. From 2021-2022 season, the
orchestra will open a new chapter with Lorenzo Viotti as the new chief conductor.
The assistant conductorship with our chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti involves 2 opera productions and
5 concert productions in the 2021-2022 season. The orchestra rehearses in the NedPhO-Koepel in
Amsterdam-Oost and the concerts take place in the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The opera
rehearsals and performances take place at the National Opera & Ballet. During the season it will be
considered whether the assistantship can be extended by one year. Compensation will consist of a
fee per production. The assistant conductor who travels from abroad, also receives a compensation
for travel and accommodation expenses.
The position
The position is for a junior-conductor at the start of his or her career. The assistant will be present at
all rehearsals of the opera and concert programs conducted by our chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti.
When necessary, he/she will prepare scores and assist in all other preparations. In some cases he/she
will take over partial or complete rehearsals or sectional rehearsals from the chief conductor. In this
way the assistant can study the way of working of the chief conductor and at the same time serve as
his ‘external ear’.
Depending on the evaluation of the assistant conductor, the assistant conductor might be given a full
production to conduct. Usually this production is of an educational nature.
At opera productions, the assistant conductor will work as second assistant at musical rehearsals
and production rehearsals. This gives him/her insight into the way of working and planning of
productions at this large opera house. Not only Lorenzo Viotti is followed in his working progress, but
also one of the permanent assistant conductors of the National Opera.
