UP Govt launches ‘Nirbhaya -Ek Pahal’ programme


The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday launched the 'Nirbhaya - Ek Pahal' programme
under Mission Shakti -Phase 3 in Uttar Pradesh`s Lucknow district. During the launch of the
programme, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath informed that as many as 75,000 women will get
connected with state banks, get loans at cheaper interest rates and be able to avail benefits of state
subsidies under the PM Mudra Yojana within three months.

Convergence with rural missions, outcome-based funding for Swachh Bharat 2.0 AMRUT
2.0
The revamped versions of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) and the Atal Mission for
Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will
launch on Friday would include convergence with the corresponding missions for rural areas and
outcome-based funding for cities, top Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MHUA) officials
said on Thursday. SBM-U 2.0 would aim to make the facilities better, reclaim all landfills and take
processing of municipal solid waste to 100% from the present 70%, the official said. Similarly,
AMRUT 2.0 would aim to provide universal coverage of water supply to all 4,378 statutory towns,
an increase from the goal of covering 500 cities in AMRUT.

Supreme Court dismisses Adani Gas’s plea


The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Adani Gas against the authorisation given by
the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to State-run Gujarat Gas to lay and
maintain a gas distribution network in rural Ahmedabad. Gujarat Gas had succeeded in securing
the authorisation for setting up the network in Sanand, Bavla and Dholka in an auction held by the

Board. A three-judge Bench of Justices U.U. Lalit, S. Ravindra Bhat and Hrishikesh Roy, in a
judgment pronounced on Tuesday, directed Adani to bear the costs of ₹10 lakh, payable to the
Union of India.

the upcoming U.N. COP26 summit in Glasgow to have a say in how decisions shaping their future
are made. Thousands of young campaigners, including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, converged on
Milan this week to have their voices heard and put an end to what she described as “30 years of
blah blah blah” in the almost three decades of climate talks.

Russia urges calm between ally Tajikistan, Afghanistan


Russia said it had heard of reports that Tajikistan and Afghanistan were sending troops to their
common border and urged them to resolve any dispute in a mutually acceptable manner, RIA
quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying. It was not immediately clear to which reports the
ministry was referring. Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon has refused to recognise the Taliban-
appointed cabinet in Kabul.

British Museum accepts Nigerian artist's gift but keeps looted bronzes
The British Museum has accepted a bronze plaque made by an artist from Benin City in Nigeria,
who said he felt this was a possible first step towards the museum’s return of the priceless Benin
Bronzes that were looted by British troops in 1897. Osarobo Zeickner-Okoro had offered his
creation to encourage the museum to give back the sculptures but also to demand acknowledgment
of Benin City’s modern-day culture.

Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari takes charge as 27th Air Chief


Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Vivek Ram Chaudhari on Thursday took over as the 27th Chief of the
Air Staff (CAS) from ACM R.K.S. Bhadauria, who superannuated after over 41 years of service.
“An alumnus of National Defence Academy (NDA), the CAS was commissioned in December
1982 in the fighter stream of the IAF. He has flown more than 3800 hours on multiple fighter and
trainer aircraft,” the Air Force said in a statement. Prior to the present appointment, he was the
Vice Chief of the Air staff.

Border incidents with China will continue till boundary agreement is reached: Indian Army
chief
Border incidents between India and China will continue to occur till a boundary agreement is
reached between the two countries, Army Chief General M M Naravane said on Thursday. Recent
developments in Afghanistan "have definitely been the focus" of the Indian Army that continues
to evaluate threat perceptions and formulate strategies accordingly, the Army chief added while
addressing a gathering at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

India-Australia undertakes 4th iteration of biennial maritime series 'AUSINDEX'


India and Australia on Thursday participated in the fourth iteration of the biennial maritime series
'AUSINDEX'. Chief of Navy Australia Michael Noonan, in a tweet, called the maritime exercise
a vital opportunity to showcase Australia's ability to conduct high-end maritime warfare training
with India and showcase a range of 'AusNavy' maritime capabilities. The fourth iteration of the
biennial maritime series #AUSINDEX took place with @indiannavy. In the fourth edition, the
surface units of both the countries will be exercising with HMAS Rankin, a Collins Class
Australian Submarine, Royal Australian Air Force P-8A and F-18A aircraft, along with integral
helicopters of both the navies.

April-August fiscal deficit reaches 31.1% of FY22 target


Helped by the buoyant tax revenues, the centre's finance continued to look healthy with the fiscal
deficit at Rs 4.68 lakh crore or 31.1% of the budget estimate at the end of first five months of the
current financial year, official data showed Thursday. The government's financial position has
vastly improved from the pandemic hit FY21 when the fiscal deficit was Rs 8.7 lakh crore, or
109.3% of the budget estimate, in April-August. The net tax revenue for the first five months was
Rs 6.45 lakh crore compared with Rs 2.84 lakh crore for the same period last year.

India current account records surplus in three months to end-June


India's current account balance moved into a surplus in the April-June quarter mainly because of
a contraction in the trade deficit, the Reserve Bank of India said in a release on Thursday. The
current account surplus stood at $6.5 billion compared to a surplus of $19.1 billion in the same
quarter a year ago. In the preceding January-March quarter the current account was in a deficit of
$8.1 billion. The surplus stood at 0.9% of the gross domestic product in the latest quarter the

Tea exports remain stagnant for last 10 years


Anupriya Singh Patel, Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that tea
exports have remained stagnant for the last 10 years and the government is worried about it. Patel
who was in Guwahati on Thursday while talking to media persons said that, “Tea Development &
Promotion Scheme (TDPS) which is for five years from 2021-22 has earmarked Rs 967 Crore for
supporting tea growers. We have a sector specific allocation of Rs 98 Crore for increasing exports
from Northeast India
