ABHIRAJ BHAL

Founder & CEO, Urban Company

Mr. Abhiraj Bhal (Abhiraj Singh Bhal) is the Co-founder and CEO
of UrbanClap (now renamed to Urban Company).

Abhiraj’s early few years were spent mainly in Mumbai where

he completed his schooling at Navy Children’s school and post
completing 8th standard, he moved to Visakhapatnam to
complete the later part. He holds a bachelors of technology
degree from IIT-K and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad (Indian
Institute of Management Ahmedabad). After completing his
master’s, he started working with the Boston Consulting Group
(BCG) in Singapore as a consultant where he advised fortune 500
companies across India, Germany, and South East Asia.

Post working with BCG for over 3 years Abhiraj returned to India
and started a movie streaming venture called Cinema Box (a
service that helped one stream movies on their smartphones
while traveling through Wi-Fi) with Varun Khaitan, his
batchmate from IIT-Kanpur who was working with the Boston
Consulting Group, America. Varun and Abhiraj met Raghav
Chandra, a computer science graduate from the University of
California, Berkeley who had previously worked with companies
like Yelp and Twitter. Raghav Chandra at that time was working
on his auto-rickshaw aggregator start-up called Buggy. in

In the initial conversation, Abhiraj Bhal & Varun Khaitan

dismissed the idea of joining Raghav Chandra’s buggy.in and
Raghav Chandra felt the same about joining Abhiraj & Varun’s
venture Cinema box. Abhiraj Bhal, Varun, and Raghav soon
closed their start-ups and finalized home services as space they
would like to venture into. Seeing that the Indian home services
sector is fragmented and largely unorganized.
Initially, all 3 started looking for beauticians, plumbers,
photographers as they would then connect them to friends and
families. After which they started testing this idea with
employees of their friend’s companies and browsed FB groups
intending to find people looking for these services. They created
a website urbanclap.com in the year 2014 and made the
company made its first investment of 4000Rs on Facebook
advertising.

In the initial days, they bootstrapped the company till Accel

Partners and SAIF Partners invested 1.6 million $ in UrbanClap.
