(57) Abstract :
In the present global scenario, almost all the sectors are moving towards the use of smart devices and applications to enhance the
customer comfort and benefits. The energy sector is one such key area, where the traditional metering infrastructures are gradually
converted to smart metering devices. The smart meters provide versatile benefits to the electricity consumers as well as suppliers.
However, the cost of installing the readily available smart meters in the market to each and every customer load is a major burden to
the government or .the consumer due to the high cost of smart meters. Besides, the communication requirement via internet is a major
constraint, specially at rural or remotely located consumers. Further, the replacement of traditional meters with smart meters
completely dumps the existing metering infrastructure. Keeping all these issues in view, this invention proposes an idea of retrofitting
the traditional energy meter with the proposed smart embedded module. This enables to use the existing metering infrastructure as it
is and by adding the smart embedded module, the traditional energy meter can be converted to smart meter. The key components of
the proposed module are LDR, Controller, LoRa Radio and a Battery. This module can be easily integrated to the existing
infrastructure. This proposed module captures the number blinks from the energy meter using the LDR and sends the data to the
controller. The program in the controller will convert the number of blinks into the meter reading (number of units consumed). With
the help of LoRa radio modules, energy meter readings can be sent to the central monitoring and control unit using the gateway. Also
using the backhaul facility, data can be made available on the cloud based on the user requirement. Thereby, the authorized user from
any part of the world can access the data.
