Day 1
Nature of Organizations
Concept: The term “organization” became prominent in management during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Some theorists define it as a social group that is oriented toward a purpose. Several others define it
as having well-coordinated processes and interacting with its environment. Putting these ideas
together, an organization is thus defined as a social group that has well-coordinated processes and
activities for the purpose of achieving its objectives and is connected to the environment where it

Types of Organizational Structures
Concept: There are six commonly known organizational structures used in different companies today. Each
of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. Generally, they type of structure used depends
on the kind of business you have. All these six are discussed in CN 5 and here:

Activity: Read and analyze the caselet found in CN 5. Your task is to create an organizational chart for the
family food service outlets to include the owner’s children on a short bond paper. After which,
identify problems that may arise with this organization and suggest courses of action to address
such problems. Write your answers below:

Concept: In 1989, Henry Mintzberg expanded the classification of organizations into a more detailed list of
types in his book, Mintzberg on Management. These classifications are discussed in CN 5.
