Laboratory Exercises No. 1

THE ATMOSPHERE

NAME: _______________________ RATING: __________

SECTION: ____________________ DATE: ____________

I. INTRODUCTION

The word atmosphere has its origin in the ancient Greek “atmos” meaning
vapor, and “sphaira” meaning sphere. Collectively, atmosphere is the gaseous
envelope surrounding the earth.

The atmosphere moderates the extremes of heat and cold upon the earth. The
air acts much like the glass roof of a greenhouse. It reduces the change in temperature
between day and night, summer and winter. The heat rays of the sun penetrate the air
and warm the earth’s surface during the day. The overlying atmosphere traps this heat
it escapes slowly into space moderating the cold of night.

Because of the changes that takes place within the atmosphere, and only
because of these changes, we, living creatures on earth experience various types of
weather. Without the atmosphere, there would be no rain to fall upon parched ground
and make the plants grow. There would be no winds and no clouds. In other words,
life on earth would not exist without the atmosphere.

II. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the exercise the student are expected:

1. To be able to understand the atmosphere, it’s structural layers and

composition ;and
2. To identify the different major classification of clouds and its structure.

III. METHODOLOGY

1. Illustrate and discuss the different layers of the atmosphere and the
characteristics of each.
2. Tabulate the gases, which comprise the atmosphere in terms of the
chemical symbol, percentage composition by volume and uses.
3. Identify the different major classification of clouds and its structure.
4. Discuss why the sky is blue.
5. Discuss why we have a red sunset.
