1945-Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd. was established to manufacture locomotives and other
engineering products.
1954-Collaboration with Daimler Benz AG, West Germany, for manufacture of medium commercial
vehicles. The first vehicle rolled out within 6 months of the contract
1961-Exports begin with the first truck being shipped to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka.

On 26th April 2010, Tata Motors sold its 4 millionth Commercial Vehicle.
Tata Motors’ total sales (including exports) of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles in
February 2011 were 77,543 vehicles, a growth of 12% over 69,427 vehicles sold in February
2010. The company’s domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for February
2011 were 73,039 nos., 10% growth over 66,190 nos. sold in February last year.
Cumulative sales (including exports) for the company for the fiscal are 719,959 nos., a growth of
27% over 567,535 nos. sold last year.
Commercial Vehicles
The company’s sales of commercial vehicles in February 2011 in the domestic market were
41,130 nos., a 5% growth compared to 39,205 vehicles sold in February last year. LCV sales
were 23,498 nos., a growth of 8% over February last year. M&HCV sales stood at 17,632 nos., a
growth of 1% over February last year.
Cumulative sales of commercial vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal are 397,029 nos., a
growth of 20% over last year. Cumulative LCV sales are 228,239 nos., a growth of 16% over last
year, while M&HCV sales stood at 168,790 nos., a growth of 26% over last year.
Passenger Vehicles
The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution offtake of 33,751 nos.
(31,909 Tata + 1,842 Fiat) in the domestic market in February 2011, higher by 15% compared to
29,238 nos. (26,985 Tata + 2,253 Fiat) in February last year. Sales of Tata passenger vehicles are
31,909 nos., higher by 18% over February 2010. Sales of the Tata Nano were 8,262 nos., higher
by 101% over February last year. The Indica range sales were 10, 044 nos., lower by 12.7% over
February last year. The Indigo range recorded sales of 8,966 nos., a growth of 22% over
February last year. The Sumo/ Safari/ Aria/ Venture range accounted for sales of 4, 637 nos.,
higher by 16% over February last year.
Cumulative sales and distribution offtake of passenger vehicles in the domestic market for the
fiscal are 289,695 nos. (270,818 Tata + 18,877 Fiat), against 229,789 nos. (207,169 Tata +
22,620 Fiat) last year, a growth of 26%. Cumulative sales of Tata passenger vehicles were
270,818 nos., a 31% increase compared to 207,169 nos., in February last year. Cumulative sales
of the Nano are 61,725 nos., a 141% increase compared to 25,640 nos., in February last year.
Cumulative sales of the Indica range are 90,908 nos., lower by 11%. Cumulative sales of the
Indigo family are 80,728 nos., higher by 64%. Cumulative sales of the Sumo/Safari/ Aria range
are 37,457 nos., higher by 26%.
Exports
The company’s sales from exports at 4,504 vehicles in February 2011 registered a growth of
39% compared to 3,237 vehicles in February last year. The cumulative sales from exports for the
fiscal at 52,112 nos. are higher by 73% over 30,036 nos. in the same period last year.
