1 Background of the study

When we hear the term “Universe” our mind is bombarded by various celestial bodies.

Gaseous and terrestrial planets, Comets, Galaxies, Shinning Stars, Nebula, etc. But

have we ever wondered how the universe works? Does it have motion? Or what are the

other things that the universe is capable to have?

Universe is the term we use to describe the collection of all the things that exist in space.

It is an empty space that separates the countless stars, planets, and enormous clouds of

gas.

According to some researches, the universe is expanding. That means that the galaxies

outside our own galaxy (Milky Way Galaxy) are moving away from us, and the ones that

are farthest away are moving the fastest. This means that no matter what galaxy you

happen to be in, all the other galaxies are moving away from you. 1 For further

understanding, this means that we will slowly lose our vision to farther galaxies making it

hard for us to study more about our universe.

How do we know that the expansion of the universe is accelerating? The universe is

expanding faster. Edwin Hubble announced his finding on 1925. He proved that the

universe is accelerating by observing the red shifting in every galaxy. He noticed the red

shifting was more severe the further away the galaxy was. This meant that galaxies

farther away were drifting apart faster than the closer galaxies.

What causes the universe expansion accelerating? Astronomers theorize that the faster

expansion rate is due to a mysterious, dark force that is pulling galaxies apart. This dark

force is what we called the “Dark Energy”. Dark Energy is a force that counteracts gravity

and causes universe to expand.

Is the never ending expansion of the universe affects the life of every individuals?

Observations suggest that the expansion of the universe will continue forever, If so, the

popular theory is that the universe will cool as it expands, eventually becoming too cold

to sustain life.2 This scenario will be called the “Heat Death” which is also called the Big

Freeze. If this happens, it will cause the universe to decrease its temperature, so in

short, there will be no chance of living. But, there is an another theory that states that the

universe might be crushed out of existence in a reverse of the Big Bang scenario, also

known as “Big Crunch”.
