ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY 1

RECITATION 2
12-29. The phosphorus in a 0.2091-g sample was precipitated as the
slightly soluble (NH4)3PO4.12MoO3. This precipitate was filtered,
washed, and then redissolved in acid. Treatment of the resulting
solution with an excess of Pb2+ resulted in the formation of 0.2922 g of
PbMoO4. Express the results of this analysis in terms of percent P2O5.
12-21. The iodide in a sample that also contained chloride was converted to
iodate by treatment with an excess of bromine:

The unused bromine was removed by boiling; an excess of barium ion was
then added to precipitate the iodate:

In the analysis of a 1.59-g sample, 0.0538 g of barium iodate was recovered.

Express the results of this analysis as percent potassium iodide.
10-12. For a solution in which µ= 8.0 x 10-2 calculate
K’sp for
(a)AgSCN.
(b)PbI2.
(c)La(IO3)3
10-14. Calculate the solubilities of the following compounds in
a 0.0333 M solution of Mg(ClO4)2 using (1) activities and (2)
molar concentrations:
(a) AgSCN.
(b) PbI2.
(c) BaSO4.
(d) Cd2Fe(CN)6.
11-12. Calculate the molar solubility of ZnCO3 in a
solution buffered to a pH of 7.00.
The following solutions were added to the 250 mL of solution including

0.04M CH3COOH and 0.06M CH3COONa;

a) 50.00 mL 0.010 M of HCl

b) 50.00 mL 0.010 M of NaOH

Calculate the ph change in the buffer solution? (Ka: 1.75x10-5)

Calculate the solubility of Ag2CrO4 (Ksp: 1.2x10-12, α for Ag+: 0.25, α for
CrO4 2-: 0.40 nm)
a) in water
b) in 0.050 M NaNO3
• A solution contains 1 x 10-4 M of both Fe2+ and Cd2+. Sulfide ions are
slowly added to this solution to precipitate either FeS or CdS.
Determine which ion precipitates first and the range of S2-
concentration that will allow a clean separation of the two ions.
• The analytical concentration of H2S in a solution saturated with H2S(g)
is 0.10 M. What pH range is necessary for the clean separation
described in part (b)?
