What is Signal Generator?

Is electronic device that generate repeating or non-

repeating electronic signals

They are generally used in designing, testing,

troubleshooting, and repairing
electronic devices
There are many different types of signal generators, with
different purposes and applications

I. Function generators

II. Analog signal generators

III. Vector signal generators

Function Generator
Definition:
Is usually a piece of electronic test equipment or software used to
generate different types of electrical
Waveform over a wide range
of frequencies.

 Some of the most common waveforms produced by the function generator

are:
The sine, square, triangular and sawtooth shapes.
Function generator controls
Frequency:
this control alters the basic frequency
at which the waveform repeats.

Waveform type:
sine, Square or Triangular wave.
DC offset:
This alters the average voltage of a signal relative to 0V or ground.
Duty cycle:
This control on the function generator changes the ratio of high voltage to low voltage
time in a square wave signal
Usages Of Function Generator:
Function generators are used in the development, test and repair of
electronic equipment.

Example:
They may be used as a signal source to test amplifiers or to introduce
an error signal into a control loop
Function Generator Specifications:
Produces sine, square, triangular, sawtooth (ramp),
and pulse output.
It can generate a wide range of frequencies.
AM or FM modulation may be supported.
Output amplitude up to 10V peak to peak.
An output impedance of 50 ohms.

Note: These are some of the specifications there are other specifications due to the number of
different types available ranging from analogue to digital, and according to their cost.
