PRACTICE EXERCISE

1. Three varieties of cowpeas were grown in pots arranged in a completely randomized design.
The dry matter yields are given in the table below. Perform the analysis of variance, and
test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance that the mean dry matter is the same
for all three varieties.

REPLICATION Variety

A B C

I 2 3 8 7 11 12

II 4 3 7 6 10 10

III 3 4 9 8 12 12

SOLUTION:
1. Ho: 𝞵1= 𝞵2= 𝞵3
H1: at least two of the means is significantly different from the others.
2. At = 0.05, do an F-test.
3. Test statistic: Fc = (MSTr/MSE)
4. Decision Rule: Critical Region: Reject Ho if Fc >3.682. Otherwise do not reject
Ho.
5. Computations :

SST= ∑X2- CF =

SST= 2²+4²+…12²- 131² =1159 – 953.389 =205.611

18
SSTr = [∑(Treat. Total)2/n] – CF =

SSTr = 19²+45²+67² - 131² = 1145.833 – 953.389 = 192.444

6 18
SSE = SST – SSTr =

SSE = 205.611 – 192.444 = 13.167

Treatment 192.444 3-1= 2 MSTr=192.444=96.222

2
96.222 = 109.62
Error 13.167 3(6- MSE= 13.167 = 0.8778 0.8778
1)=15 15

Total 205.611 (6*3)-

1=17

6. Decision : Since Fc= 109.62 > F 0.05 (2,15)= 3.682, we will reject the Null
hypothesis.
7. Conclusion : Therefore, the mean fry matter is not the same for all varieties.

2. A food technology researcher wants to compare the TSS value of the three
flavored juices arranged in a completely randomized design. The TSS value are given in
the table below. Perform the analysis of variance, and test the hypothesis at the 0.05
level of significance that the mean TSS is the same for all three treatments.

REPLICATION Treatment

1 2 3

I 5.0 5.2 5.0 5.4 5.2 5.1

II 7.2 7.0 7.6 7.2 7.6 7.5

III 7.2 6.7 7.0 7.0 7.0 7.4

SOLUTION:
Otherwise do not reject Ho. 5.
5. Computations :
SST= ∑X2- CF =

45
SST = 5.0²+7.2²+…7.4² - 117.3² =782.19 – 764.405= 17.785
18
SSTr = [∑(Treat. Total)2/n] – CF =

SSTr = 38.3²+39.2²+39.8² = 117.3² = 764.595 – 764.405= 0.19

6 18
SSE = SST – SSTr =

SSE = 17.785 – 0.19 = 17.595

freedom
Treatment 0.19 3-1=2 MSTr= 0.19 = 0.095
2
0.19 = 0.08099
Error 17.595 3(6- MSE= 17.595 = 1.173 1.173
1)=15 15

Total 17.785 (6*3)-

1=17

6. Decision : Since Fc= 0.8099> F 0.05(2,15) = 3.682, we will not reject the null hypothesis.
7. Conclusion : Therefore, the TSS is the same for all three treatments.
