Track the Product Research

Head & Shoulders (H&S) is an American brand of anti-dandruff and non-dandruff shampoo introduced in
1961 by parent company Procter & Gamble. It originated in the United States. The Science of Head and
Shoulders Science is in our DNA, from our pioneering founder Dr. Parran to the cutting-edge technology we
use today.
Cosmetic chemists in the laboratory first develop new shampoos. These scientists begin by determining the
properties of the shampoo formula. They must make aesthetic decisions such as how thick it should be, what
color it should be, and what it should smell like.

They also consider performance characteristics such as how well it cleans, the appearance of the foam, and
how irritating it will be. Consumer testing is frequently used to help determine what these characteristics
should be.

Once the characteristics of the shampoo have been identified, a formula is developed in the laboratory. The
first batches are made in small beakers with a variety of ingredients. Almost all of the ingredients that can be
used in the personal care industry are classified by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association
(CTFA) in the government-approved collection known as the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic
Ingredients (INCI). Water, detergents, foam boosters, thickeners, conditioning agents, preservatives,
modifiers, and special additives are the most important ingredients in shampoo formulations.
