Team Leadership and Management

ACTIVITY 1

Becoming a Nurse Leader is a big responsibility with a lot of challenges. They are in charge of
directing patient care initiatives and making decisions for a team of nurses. To become one, I
believe it takes a long time and a lot of preparation. Being a team leader necessitates extensive
knowledge, skills, and a positive attitude, which you should share and assist your team members
in developing. I believe I am a novice or a beginner in this area not because I lack knowledge,
skills, or attitude, but because we did not have a senior in a clinical experience to assist or guide
us. It's all new to me, even though I have some expectations and ideas about becoming a Team
Leader.

Through reading lectures and extensive research regarding the patient’s case, practicing skills, and
applying my learnings in the past few years can help me become a good team leader or nurse
leader. I believe being also able to share and genuinely want to teach and guide my fellow
members, listening to their ideas and questions, and assisting them can also contribute on become
a good leader. Because an ideal nurse leader has good values and is sensitive and/or self-
aware. For me, a good or ideal leader is someone who is empathetic, supports their team members,
trustworthy, a good listener, and can inspire and encourage more nurses or student nurses. Being
an ideal leader doesn’t only mean being good with skills or their actions but also having the heart
and passion for doing their responsibilities that doesn’t make them feel obliged.

If there are good and ideal nurse leaders, there are also those who are not good role models or
worse nurse leaders. Like those who are toxic at work, don’t have a good relationship with the
team, don’t also follow moral and ethical principles at work, withhold important information from
members, and don’t help their members to improve and practice their skills. Having this kind of
leader creates a bad working environment and stagnation lack of development in the team. Because
a good nurse leaders or managers are responsible people and prioritize the wellbeing of the patient
and at the same time the wellbeing of their members.
