PREVIEWING & PEDICTING

Previewing
There are two skills that are essential for a good reader: Previewing and Predicting. When
you gather information about a book by examining its cover, you are previewing. The aim
of previewing is to help you to “predict” or make some “educated guess” about what is in
the book. You should develop the habit of applying these skills whenever you read.
Previewing and predicting before you read can make a big difference. You can get some
ideas about what you will read. This will enable you processing the information far more
quickly. You will also be able to follow the writer’s ideas better. Though it takes a few
minutes to preview and predict, those few minutes are well invested. You will find that
later you save reading time and gain comprehension.
Exercise 1:

something to read, so your friend offers you three books. Read the information from the
book covers given below and make some predictions about each book. Decide which one
you would like to read. You 60 seconds to decide.

Book 1
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

drained by subliminal messages being sent to them through television and radio
broadcasts by Mr. Benedict’s lost twin brother Ledroptha Curtain. Mr. Curtain had hoped
to make himself the hero when he saved the world from a public panic that he created.
Themes addressed in the novel include the desire to belong, confronting one’s fear and
the importance of teamwork.

Book 2
An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of
masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young
lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry
her father's choice, the County Paris. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William
Shakespeare early in his career about two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths
ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular
plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed
plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

Book 3
This retelling of the old Chinese folktale is about the story of a young Chinese maiden
who learns that her weakened and lame father is to be called up into the army in order to
fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he would never survive the rigours of war in his
state, she decides to disguise herself and join in his place. Unknown to her, her ancestors
are aware of this and to prevent it, they order a tiny disgraced dragon, Mushu to join her
in order to force her to abandon her plan. He agrees, but when he meets Mulan, he learns
that she cannot be dissuaded and so decides to help her in the perilous times ahead.

because I really like disney especially princess. Not only that, this story has a
good moral message. From this film, it teaches how important determination and
the ability to keep going and proceed in life, even though it doesn't have to be in
line with what is expected, but it doesn't have to make you stop doing it. There
are many paths that you must take to achieve all your dreams, overcome your
doubts with strong faith and travel without hesitation.

Exercise 3:

usually closely connected to the author’s ideas, it is important to preview these, too.

specific.

Write your predictions:

After writing your prediction, compare it with the article on the next page. Did you make
accurate prediction?

Covid-positive man disguises himself as wife to board Indonesia flight

The country reported 49,000 cases and 1,566 deaths due to coronavirus on Friday, July 23

Charlene Rodrigues@Piccolinanne. Friday 23 July 2021 15:21

An Indonesian man who was covid-positive disguised himself as his wife to board a domestic
flight but was caught midway, after a flight attendant spotted him changing into his regular
clothes.
The man, who went by his initials, wore a full-face veil known as ‘niqab’ to board, which
obscured his face.
“He bought the plane ticket with his wife’s name and brought the identity card, the PCR test
result and the vaccination card with his wife’s name. All documents are under his wife’s
name,” Ternate police chief Aditya Laksimada said.
Police said it was not long before a flight attendant aboard a Citilink plane traveling from
Jakarta to Ternate in North Maluku province noticed the man change the clothes in the
lavatory.
Police told reporters that the man was detained after the plane landed and was tested
immediately.
After testing positive for the virus, he was ordered to self-isolate at home.
Police say they will move to prosecute him as soon as his quarantine ends.
The incident comes amid Indonesia’s devastating wave of coronavirus infections, driven by
the Delta variant. Still, the government is already talking about relaxing restrictions enforced
earlier this month - a move analysts say is largely dominated by economic considerations.
The healthcare infrastructure in Asia’s covid-19 epicenter is severely strained as people
scramble to find hospital beds, oxygen and medicine for loved ones.
President Joko Widodo is already talking about easing restrictions from as early as next week
if cases start to drop.
But health experts have warned the decision is likely “premature and potentially dangerous.”
The country reported 49,000 cases and 1,566 deaths on Friday.
While cases have fallen from more than 56,000 in mid-July, epidemiologists have warned
that testing rates also dropped in the same period, making it difficult to determine whether
there has been a genuine fall in covid-19 infections.
